Another Good Day Gone Bad

I slowly pressed my foot down on the gas petal as I approached the passing lane. I was tired of following the old man in his beat up, red pick up at fifty miles per hour. I needed to get to class! I was right behind him when I topped the hill and entered the passing zone. That’s when I saw it. I realized this somewhat good day just turned into the worst day of all.

The warm April morning was just what I needed to refresh my mind. I had been stressed out over schoolwork and with the nice sunny morning; everything seemed right. I started the day at 6:30 a.m. when I was rudely awakened by my screaming alarm clock. I got up and began my daily routine. I had my usual breakfast, which consisted of; a cinnamon roll and a glass of milk. I was running a little behind, but I still had enough time to make it to school. As I was going to brush my teeth, I had seen that my sister had beat me to the bathroom, so I had to wait patiently for her to finish up. After I completed my morning routine, I grabbed my bags after brushing my teeth and headed out the door.

I started my car and was on my half an hour drive to class. With my music up, and my head jamming with the beat, I realized what a good day it was really turning out to be. I’m driving along the highway when I come up to this red, beat up pick up. The old man was going 50 MPH on a 65. I sped up a little to be able to pass the old pick up, and there it was; a blue ford expedition with red and blue lights on top. I didn’t think much of it until I realized the police officer was flipping a U-turn. I began to get scared even knowing I had done nothing wrong. I pulled over and he approached my window.

“Good morning sir” I said.

“Good morning’ he replied “I need to see your license and proof of insurance please”.

I handed the man both things as asked for.

“Did you know you were following that car too close?’

I sat there for a..

I wish to first share with you a story. Many years ago when I was working in Sacramento I had to make a trip for work to San Los Opisbo. The funeral was to be in the early afternoon so I could make the trip in one day. I got all my items together. I had maps and directions from map-quest. I knew my direction and I was going to make it there. I got there in no problem but noticed that I took me a little longer then I had planned. Once there service was over I got in the van that I was driving and looked over the map and saw that I just needed to drive on the road I was on and then turn near the town of Avenal and that would get me on I-5. I started out and began driving. After a while I noticed that I hadn't taken the right turn that I had planned on doing. I pulled over and saw that if I stayed on this road I could go into the town of Coalinga and then get I-5 again. But it was going to be more driving on this quite road. I said to myself well I will just have to go faster to make up the time. It felt like forever but I know it was not but I came up over a rise and saw the familiar outline of a highway patrol car. I pulled to the right of the road right as I passed him. His lights came on and over to me and came around behind me. He came over to my window where I had my drivers license and insurance waiting for him. He askeme where I was heading. After a long explanation he saw all my maps and told me that I was going to fast and that I needed to slow down. He let me off but said that if he ever caught me again He would “throw the book at me” –…

I backed out of my driveway and proceeded my way South on my street till I reached the stop sign. I turned my right blinker on, and heard the tick-tock sound until I made my ninety degree turn. I eventually made it to Nadilee’s house, one of my driving buddies. Nadilee got into the back seat of the minivan, and I continued to make a loop around her yard to start going North on Olive Avenue.…

The harsh terrain in the area of modern Iran made it very difficult for humans to survive and find water sources. The arid climate meant more work for agriculture and agricultural surplus was very rare. Trying to go to school the next day. Standing in the shower thinking maybe if I dont get out I wouldn't have to start my day and move on with it all. But as the water turns to a shivering cold I realize it’s all too real. Pushing through the first five periods of the day, the last three seemed as too much. Feeling as if I will never be able to be happy again. All these gloomy days crafted me into who I am today. This whole experience making me grow up just a little bit faster, and a little more mature and understanding seeming as I already live the life as an adult, but only being a…

It was Tuesday, March first, 2011, my mother woke me up so I can start getting ready for school. I rose with eager anticipation, just four more days until my thirteenth birthday and I just couldn’t wait. I brushed my teeth and hurried down to eat the complimentary breakfast offered to us by the hotel we were staying at. You see we had been staying at a hotel for the past five months because the home we had been renting was foreclosed on so the utility companies turned off the power and the electricity. We had to get down at just the right time so that there was a small crowd but a lot of food so that we can take food back to the room to save for dinner. After breakfast, we…

Opening my eyes, I was greeted by the bright, shiny sun peeking through the curtains. A little over a year ago I was a senior in high school, leaving school with the weekend ahead of me, ready to unwind, and enjoy the night with my friends. On my trip home my mother called me and asked if I could go out of my way to pick my sister up from school; reluctantly, I tell her that I will. Before that call my friends and I had established that I would be driving us to the senior class tailgate before the football game that night. Wanting to get to the tailgate faster, I begin to force my foot on the gas pedal a little more, without thinking about the consequences of my risk. Suddenly, I look back in my rear view mirror and see the dreaded red, blue, and white lights flashing. I look down at my speedometer and realize…

I stayed in the left lane and was behind an old, slow-moving, flaked dark-green Chevrolet. The license plate was “MY-57”. Maybe his turn signal lights weren’t working, I don’t know, but suddenly he stopped. The right lane wasn’t busy, but I stopped so close to that car that I couldn’t pass him in right lane. Behind me was a yellow, 40-foot school bus with a woman driver so, of course, I couldn’t back up. I did not realize that the Chevy driver had wanted to make a left turn and so I had to wait for…

I finished my chores and convinced my dad to let me out. I got into my Jetta and drove from Highland Park to Glendale. During my commute, I knew or at least thought nothing could stop me. I was on a roll, I was about to go chill with my friends and go looking for girls. It was a win-win situation. As I approached a stop sign on Palmer St. it hit me. There he was, a Los Angeles County Sheriff. I knew in my head he was looking right at me. So I tried my best to not look suspicious but I was so nervous. It was my turn to cross the intersection; it was the moment of truth. The only thing running through my mind was, hoping that I didn't get pulled over. So, I tried my best to cross the intersection by the book. I stopped behind the line, looked left-right-left, waited three seconds, and then finally made my move. I thought…

I awoke to the slamming of the front door, remembering that it was Sunday, my dad's favorite day of the year, the first day of hunting season. I jump out of bed and stumble down the stairs waking everybody else in the house up. Looking out the window I see my dad pull away in his big red pickup truck with the sleeve of his orange hunting jacket hanging out the window. Hoping he brings home dinner, I start to make myself breakfast, I make my dad's favorite; eggs with crispy bacon. As I'm cooking breakfast I think to myself, I wished I had gotten up earlier to say bye to him, or even go out with him. It was a beautiful day to go out hunting and I had never missed the first day of the season before. It was like a tradition he and I had, we would always go out and hunt together. My dad and I had a relationship that not many fathers and daughters had; we really enjoyed spending time together doing things outside that not many people like to do. Losing my train of thought, I look down at the pan of charred eggs and sigh. Nothing went like planned today, I thought.…
