It had been fifty years after Beowulf had defeated Grendel and his mother. Beowulf had returned home to his homeland and became king there and his rule was successful. There was a dragon that lived near by to Beowulf’s kingdom, which guarded old treasure. A thief stole a goblet from him and awakened him, and the dragon then went on a revengeful killing spree. “The dragon began to belch out flames/ and burn bright homesteads; there was a hot glow/ that scared everyone, for the vile sky-winger/ would leave nothing alive in his wake.” (l. 2312-2315) The dragon held onto this treasure, which is useless now, so long that he was able to know exactly what was gone and he must have had it back. The dragon represents greed and selfishness. The dragon began to slay people because of his missing goblet. When Beowulf heard about the dragon, he decided to do something about it immediately, as a good king should. During the battle between Beowulf and the dragon, both parties were fatally wounded. The dragon fought to the death to protect “his” treasure that he found, while Beowulf fought to protect “his” people. The dragon’s greed and selfishness had taken over his life and his lifestyle, which became the death of me. It can also be seen that Beowulf had allowed greed to overcome him, and that being the death of him also. He wanted the dragon’s treasure for his people, and his last wish was to see the treasure that he…

Beowulf is determined to accomplish a task, and he does it like no one else could, without haste.” ("The Courage, Strength, and Integrity of Beowulf."), following the very core of what integrity and honor mean and are, the actions of any person that have direct or indirect effects on the world around them. “The dragon gets the best of Beowulf, he "seized all his neck with his sharp fangs: he was smeared with life-blood, gore welled out in waves" (Norton 62). Wiglaf, then, summons his wits and they killed the dragon: "The wound which the dragon had dealt him began to burn and swell; at once he felt dire evil boil in his breast within him"(Norton 62). Our hero is finally defeated. Even though he is seriously injured, he still had the strength to break the fifty-foot dragon in half. He knows that his life has ended, and with it, all the joy of his years on earth. The days are done, death most near. Beowulf then says, "Now I would wish to give my son my war-clothing, if any heir after me, part of my flesh, were granted" (62). Beowulf is saying that if God had granted him a son that he would be the first one to receive his armor and sword. Beowulf is then at peace.” ("Code of Honor in the Epic of Beowulf.") The aspect of the quote that deals with Beowulf finding peace in knowing that his heir will receive his armor and his people the fruits of his sacrifice shows how his integrity lead him to power through his wounds and defeat the creature, being what he saw as the best use of the emotions flooding over him during his dying breaths. The morality in taking action through immense pain and suffering is the source of the words honor and…

Beowulf is loosely divided into three parts, each of which centers around Beowulf’s fight with a particular monster: first Grendel, then Grendel’s mother, then the dragon. One can argue that this structure relates to the theme of the epic in that each monster presents a specific moral challenge against which the Anglo-Saxon heroic code can be measured and tested. Beowulf’s fight with Grendel evokes the importance of reputation as a means of expanding one’s existence beyond death. Grendel’s great and terrifying nature ensures that Beowulf will long be celebrated for his heroic conquering of this foe. His subsequent encounter with Grendel’s mother evokes the importance of vengeance. Just as Beowulf exacts revenge upon Grendel for killing Hrothgar’s men, so too must Grendel’s mother seek to purge her grief by slaying her son’s murderer. Beowulf’s final encounter with the dragon evokes a heroic approach to wyrd, or fate. Though he recognizes that his time has come and that he will thus not survive his clash with the dragon, he bravely embraces his duty to protect his people, sacrificing his life to save them.…

This dragon wore armor and had weapons of blowing fire. This is a huge downfall for Beowulf because he cannot compete with such strong thing as fire. Beowulf did not want to use a weapon he proclaims to the people, “I’d use no sword, no weapon” (630) just to show how powerful he is. Beowulf shows the readers how he is brining out his true strength and not using a weapon but just his hands. As he tries to tear limb-by-limb off he describes, “breath will be burning hot, poison will pour from his tongue (633-634)”. He cannot over come the hotness and against this brutal monster. A new hero named Wiglaf appears and protects Beowulf from this monster. This fight is very different from the others because usually Beowulf is the one protecting the people of the town but now Beowulf has to be protected. In the end Beowulf dies a hero of the town defending three monsters from the…

In the epic poem Beowulf, the warrior hero Beowulf chooses to confront the tyrannical monster Grendel in his own domain, the hijacked mead hall of Heorot. A battle of brute strength ensues, in which Grendel, unable to escape his opponent’s awesome armgrip, rips away from his own arm and flees, dying soon after from bloodloss. Beowulf’s victory, though relatively early in the story, is a pivotal moment that signifies the defeat of discord and the return of civilization. Beowulf had aged and he didn’t have any motivation to battle with anyone. This instance seemed different to him because the dragon had recently scorched the earth and anything in his way. A peasant had tried to make some money and stole some treasure from the dragons stash. The dragon raged with anger about the stolen treasure and sought out to find the stolen treasure no matter what the circumstances. The dragon burned down cities and kingdoms and eventually made it’s way to Beowulf’s castle and torched that to the ground. Beowulf prepared for the battle by finding out where the dragon’s home is located and Beowulf gathered a group of eleven willing to fight men. The battle ended with Beowulf and the dragon dying. Beowulf’s eleven ‘willing’ men fled except for one, Wiglaf. Wiglaf ended up becoming the leader of the Geats as commanded by…
