Today heroes consist of superman, batman, Tom Cruises and Michael Jordans who are very different from Beowulf's time. Back then, heroes were kings and warriors who basically protected their people and country. The warriors were strong men who could physically make or prevent an attack in order to protect their country. The roles of the heroes have changed today, though people still aspire to be like them. Heroes today, just as in Beowulf's time, are made immortal by the written word. While in our day heroes do not literally fight Grendels or dragons, they figuratively fight these battles everyday. Beowulf fought Grendel for his own glory and it seems, more importantly, to make the lives…

The sound of battle echoed from the halls of Heorot to the plains of geatland, Beowulf in all his glory was a conquering hero that was approaching his twilight years as king. As such he faced a new challenge, in his youth he fought and defeated Grendel and his mother to defend the people of Denmark and Heorot, he was now called to defend his land from this dragon. This beast which had awakened from its dormant rest and was now on a rampage to defend its treasure. These monsters shared many similarities that tie together with a unifying message. In Beowulf, the values and views of Anglo-Saxon society are reflected in the idea that both Grendel and the Dragon serve as warning that no man is immortal or god like and that we will all face judgement.…

The first battle takes place in the Herot because of the monster Grendel has been coming at night, terrorizing and eating many of the soldiers that sleep inside the Herot. When Beowulf found out about this, he came over to the island and said that he would get rid of the monster. In this battle, Beowulf does not use any weapons against Grendel; he uses only his bare hands and strength. When Grendel comes, Beowulf grabs Grendel and ends up pulling Grendel's shoulder right out of the socket. Grendel then runs away back to his lair to die. Meanwhile, Beowulf hangs the arm and claw from the rafters in the Herot to show what he had done.…

The introduction of Grendel to Herot caused many of the people to turn back to their pagan ways. For example, the author states, “Sometimes at pagan shrines they vowed offerings to idols, swore oaths that the killer of souls might come to their aid and save the people.” (lines 175-180). Out of fear, the people of Herot decided to turn to their false gods and away from Christian ideals. Grendel and his mother, with their role of causing fear are able to highlight one of the main reason the epic Beowulf was written; Christianity versus paganism. Another example of a pagan ideal being shown, is shortly after Grendel’s mother attacks. For example, the people of Herot seek revenge for their lost ones rather than mourning for them. Page 97, lines 1374-1389, “’Wise sir, do not grieve. It is always better to avenge dear one than to indulge in mourning.’”…

Grendel telling the story makes readers feel sympathetic towards him . In the epic of Beowulf, Grendel was a monster who was pure evil but in this, he is almost childlike which makes the reader pity him. When he was being attacked by humans, "he bellowed for his mother” just like how a child would call out for his mom when he is hurt.…

Beowulf’s first villain Grendel is an exceptionally diverse character. His nature is ambiguous. He is a mix of man and beast and his fury is based on very human feelings of resentment and jealousy. Although Grendel is portrayed as an animal like demonic creature of some sort, upon further examination the reader begins to sympathize with the very human emotions that drive him to kill.…

In the story Beowulf, there was a lot of events that happened. Beowulf helped the people of Herot. One of the events that happened, Beowulf killed Grendel and that wasn't even for his people. Beowulf In 50 Years Wiser

In conclusion, I believe in the 50 years between the battles with Grendel and Grendel’s and the dragon, Beowulf has become a smarter, wiser man. Beowulf was no longer a man whose only concern was showing off, he became a man who properly prepared for battle, who took into consideration the lives of his people and who choose the next great leader of his tribe. Beowulf not only changed as a fighter, but also as a…

Beowulf exemplifies the traits of the perfect hero. The poem explores his heroism in two separate phases and through three separate and increasingly difficult conflicts with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. Although we can view these three encounters as expressions of the heroic code, there is perhaps a clearer division between Beowulf’s youthful heroism as an unfettered warrior and his mature heroism as a reliable king. These two phases of his life, separated by fifty years, correspond to two different models of virtue, and much of the moral reflection in the story centers on differentiating these two models and on showing how Beowulf makes the transition from one to the other.…
