Beowulf Hero Characteristics
Beowulf the Great Batman smashes into the Joker’s lair. He knocks out all of the Joker’s henchman and then moves on to clobber the Joker. He rescues the captives and saves the day! Batman is a true example of a great modern hero. However, not all heroes are modern. There are hundred of great ancient heroes. One of them is a man named Beowulf. Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon hero who fights for others. He exemplifies a set of characteristics that holds true to every superhero. These characteristics are bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. Beowulf, one of the greatest heroes of all time, truly does represent all of these heroic characteristics. First of all, Beowulf displays that he is brave. Bravery is defined by courageous behaviors. At the very beginning of the story, he is portrayed as brave. He is asked to travel far away from his home and he takes on that responsibility. “Proclaiming that he’d go to that famous king, would sail across the sea to Hrothgar, Now when help was needed.”(114-116). That takes a huge amount of bravery just to …show more content…
One reason he is loyal is because he was willing to go fight Grendel because his king told him to. “My people have said, the wisest, most knowing / And best of them, that my duty was to go to the Danes’ Great King” (244-246). Beowulf knows that his king will steer him in the right direction by telling him to go to the Danes. That shows a great amount of loyalty. Another way he is loyal is when he kills Grendel. His job is to save the people from Grendel, which he completes, however, Grendel’s mother appears. Beowulf knows that he must stay loyal to the Danes and goes to kill Grendel’s mother as well. This shows he is loyal to the Danes because he wants them to be safe and have the best quality of living. A final way he is loyal is to his subject as king. His subjects are being attacked by a dragon. He knows it is his duty to save his people so he goes and fights. Sadly, it leads to his

The loyalty of Beowulf as a hero, is shown in many different ways. Beowulf helps others, even when it doesn’t involve him. Beowulf is the type of hero that will go out of his way to help someone in need. That, to me, is a very loyal thing to do. Even toward the end of his life, Beowulf said “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again.” (Lines 624-626) This passage is proof of Beowulf’s loyalty.…

To sum it all up, In Beowulf, Beowulf is an archetypal hero who ended up being corrupted by the fame and fortune that was gained while doing the Danes a favour and killing their monsters. In Grendel, Grendel was labeled as a monster who tried to be part of a human society; the failure to be accepted as part of the society has forced Grendel to act like how he was labeled.…

Being courageous is one of the first qualities that sets a hero apart from a common human being. Being courageous means to stand up to adversity without fear, to continue to forge on regardless of the daunting things one faces. Beowulf was not shy about showing his courage. When he hears of Grendal’s torment to Hrothgar’s kingdom, Beowulf races to their aid. He does not hesitate when he asks permission of Hrothgar to slay Grendal. He knows thus far, they have been unable to defeat the demon. When Grendal comes to the kingdom that same night, Beowulf, using no weapons other than his bare hands, looks -Grendal in the eyes and rips off his arm, causing him to be mortally wounded. (Lines 750-820) This passage of Beowulf is a great example of what it means to be…

Beowulf shows bravery from the time he fought the mighty Dragon when all left him. He will not back down from the Dragon even if his men do not show bravery. Beowulf will do anything to win because he is not afraid. While fighting the great Dragon, he was struggling, but he never quit. "Beowulf rose, still brave, and a mail shirt on his breast" (Beowulf 688-689). This shows that even though the Dragon was greater than Beowulf, he still rose to bravery. Bravery mirrored what Beowulf had against the mighty Dragon.…

Loyalty is one of the most important qualities a man can have, the Anglo-Saxons possessed this quality and kept it sacred. Beowulf's honor and loyalty saved Hrothgar country and his beloved people. "Nor have I see a mightier man-at-arms on this earth than the one standing here: unless I am mistaken , he is truly noble. This is no mere hanger - on in a herds armor." (244- 251) This quote is showing the loyalty Beowulf beholds and that the people cherish so much. Beowulf stands upon others with his loyalty to his king. He drops everything and helps Hrothgar each time he needs him , conquering Grendel, his mother, and the dragon. However not only Beowulf is loyal in the text, almost every other character in Beowulf is loyal to someone, in their own way. Beowulf most importantly emphasizes the significance of loyalty. Beowulf could have if he was willing too could've seized the throne from Hygelac or Hrothgar, but he is much too loyal to ever betray his friends and battle against them. This…

Beowulf grew up a fighter and knew he was destined for greatness in battle as one of the most supreme warriors to roam the mortal world. Beowulf was not fond of recognizing personal downfalls and weakness. Instead, he carried himself with confidence, a sense of swagger, and the heart of a lion. The hero of the time, was much more interested in fighting and building his individual reputation rather than taking over King Heardred’s throne. When the time comes where Beowulf is forced to step into the spotlight and become king, he does not just accept the normal responsibilities that come with being king. Beowulf takes the task by the horns, he doesn’t let his new duties blind…

One’s honor was everything. If you gave your word, you were expected to follow through with it. Beowulf had no trouble with this. He promised Hrothgar in lines 164-165 that he would “purge all evil” from Herot. He remained true to his word throughout the poem. Less honorable men might’ve left as soon as they killed Grendel, but Beowulf stayed and fought until he fulfilled his promise. His honor is what drove the story, what made the poem continue. The story would have been awfully dull and short if Beowulf had changed his mind and backed out. “Beowulf” would not be a classic. No one would want to read it. It would not be a part of school curriculum. It would’ve changed the entire story and its impact on the…

In the text Beowulf shows his bravery in everything he does. Before fighting Grendel Beowulf removed his sword and said he would use no form of protection. By going to battle a monster with no weapons, Beowulf shows a great amount of courage. He does this because he believes that using weapons would be an unfair disadvantage which shows that he is also honorable, another trait of a true hero. It is true that Beowulf doesn’t use weapons in the movie either, but instead of standing up and fighting like a true hero, he shows nothing but cowardice as the only way he defeats Grendel is by waiting until his arm gets trapped and pulling is off. Also in the text Beowulf shows bravery by going to defeat Grendel’s mother. Even when it seems like all hope is lost and Beowulf’s about to meet his end he comes back and defeats the monster. In the movie, however, he gives into his lust and sleeps with Grendel’s mother, giving her a child (the dragon). The text shows the values and morals that humans should have while the film makes it look like money, lust, and greed are the most important things in the world.…
