Beowulf Compare And Contrast Essay

There is always that one kid who watches the movie after reading the book and blurts out “I liked the book more”, well in this epic I was that obnoxious child blurting out their love for the book rather than the movie. Having read the epic Beowulf and watched the movie Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson), There are many differences in both. Additions of characters, lines are different, and the fact that there was no dragon in the movie are the most apparent. None the less, the difference that stood out to me the most was the change in personalities in the characters Grendel, Beowulf, and Hrothgar. Grendel and Beowulf differ from that of the epic in ways in which Grendel is almost a human being with feelings and can actually speak not to mention can even produce in the movie, Beowulf was not all that God fearing in the movie, whereas in the book he worshipped him. Grendel in the epic was portrayed as a flesh eating creature that was put in high detestation and had little to no custody of his doings. He is a demon descended from Cain whereas in the movie they actually have him
The book had depicted Hrothgar to be Beowulf's practical father, Hrothgar was familiar with Beowulf's father and in turn promised to love him like a family member. Hrothgar in the epic was Beowulf's role model and was the type of king that Beowulf wanted to be. They also made Hrothgar seem like the overall basic nice guy of the story, he would be at Beowulf's right side asking if he needed help and in the movie I didn’t see much of this act. The movie also has Hrothgar as the whole reason that this town is under raid of Grendel.
