1. In your text on Pages 206-207, the author discusses his research on the homeless population. He refers to the many routes one can take to become homeless. Choose two populations from his list that you might work with in your career as human services professional. Describe two possible interventions or tasks that you might be involved with in working with each population what are some of the general skills a human services professional might need to work with these population.
The text discussed many ways a person could become homeless and many groups within the homeless community. Push-outs and the mentally ill are two groups in the homeless community that may require assistance from someone in the Human Service field.
Puch-outs can be described as teenagers that have been kicked out of their homes or adults that have been kicked out of their homes from foreclosure or eviction. There are 50,000 homeless youth sleeping on the streets for six months or more at a time. (National Alliance to End Homelessness) The federal government has adopted strategies to end homelessness which includes Prevention and Diversion along with transitional support into the foster care system. A Human Service worker could be used to coordinate services and locate community based organizations to assist in conflict resolutions with the youth and their families. Also provide intervention as case worker in the child welfare services. Rapid re-housing is also a strategy that can be coordinated by a human service worker that is aware of the community, and their own cultural backgrounds and those of the families and youth they are working with. (ESHSP. 1996. P. 3).
Chronic homelessness is a term used to describe the physically and mentally ill homeless population, because they have a hard time stabilizing their lives to maintain a residence. This is because they need extensive services which include psychiatric facilities, medical
