Victoria’s Secret is a highly popular company selling bras, underwear, lingerie, apparel, make-up, and fragrances. Victoria’s Secret was founded by Roy Raymond in 1977, after feeling embarrassed while shopping for lingerie in a department store. Roy’s main goal was to create a store where men could shop for lingerie for their wives comfortably. In the beginning, business was booming brining in more than 4 million dollars a year, but apparently the company was nearing bankruptcy. Later, in 1982, Roy decided to sell the company to Leslie Wexner, founder and CEO of L Brands, who decided to shift gears and direct the store towards women rather than men (Barr, Naomi). Leslie Wexner held the first Victoria’s Secret fashion…

Very often we see women depicted in advertisements wearing very little and trying to seduce the men even though their target market is women. What is the purpose of targeting men with beautiful women, when you are not trying to sell them anything? Simple, it creates an image of what you are supposed to look like to be attractive to a man. Victoria Secret’s commercials constantly do this with women who come out strutting down the runway with one of those looks that says you “Feast on me, I’m here to be looked at, my body is for your eyes.” (Bordo 191) Bordo uses this quote as she describes the young man in the Calvin Klein ad who without being forward about it portrays an image of sexuality. This is contrary to most of the images we usually see and Bordo describes this in an interesting way as she says “His body isn’t a stand-in phallus; rather he has a penis.”…

The message it was sending was not that they have a large selection of bras, but that their models have perfect bodies. It caused uproar and a petition on Change.org was sent out to change the slogan of the campaign as “contributes to a culture that encourages serious health problems such as negative body image and eating disorders" (Bahadur). The effects of this poorly worded slogan gave off the wrong message and could cause women to strive for that specific body type. In a study by Teen People, which surveyed girls, “27%... felt that the media pressures them to have a perfect body.” In a study done by Dr. Eric Stice, Dr. Diane Spangler, and Dr. W. Stewart Agras showed that girls that already had body problems showed more “dieting, body dissatisfaction, anxiety and bulimic symptoms like binging and purging” (Goode). If one already had body image issues and felt the pressure from the media, they would end up dieting or subsequently develop an eating disorder. Another example of a wrong message sent through the media is the thigh gap controversy at Urban Outfitters. On the Urban Outfitters website, they were selling a pair of mesh briefs; but the model had a thigh gap, “a space between a woman's upper thighs, so her legs don't touch when in a neutral position”…

A lot of times, in well-known magazines, the models are advertising products, but there is more focus on what the model is wearing. Or should we say not wearing. Kathryn Minniti mentions in her article that “models are supposed to show off the products in a way that makes the public want to buy them. Today's advertisements make it more likely for women to invest in diet pills and exercise equipment rather than blue jeans and swimsuits.” Instead of actually putting the focus on the item being sold, women's’ bodies are being used to make sales.…
