Bayardo Reflection
Today in class we discussed chapter one and two of Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The main occurrences within this chapter were the marriage of Angela Vicario and Bayardo San Roman as well as the events that led up to the murder of Santiago Nasar. The motive for Santiago’s murder is his apparent deflowering of Angela. At the start of chapter two it is explained how Bayardo arrived in the town and we get an inside into his characterization. He is a flamboyant and proud man who believes that he can get anything he wants in this small seaside town. He shows his true colors perfectly when he selected Angela as his wife. His pursuit of her and his lavish displays of power and influence lead the readers to have an uneasy feeling about him. His parents and family also display this aura when they arrive for Angela and Bayardo’s wedding. His father is silent and intimidating while his sisters are flashy and proud. Another thing that becomes apparent in these chapters is society’s brutality towards woman through tradition and cultural beliefs. Angela protested her wedding towards her parents on the claim that she did not love Bayardo. Her mother simply said that love can be learned. Angela has suicidal thoughts and seems to be in a sort of melancholic depression. The pressure of family and society leaves her no choice but to face her doubts and fears and marry Bayardo. At the end of the chapter, things take a turn for the worse when it is apparent that Angela is not a virgin. This is a disgrace to her and the honor of her family. This is an unforgivable crime. She is severely punished for this. What is worse though is that she pinpointed this “crime” on Santiago, saying that he was the one who deflowered her. In the book it is said that she pinned him to a wall like a butterfly. We are left to wonder if Santiago was really the culprit or if Angela made it up in order to save

In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Marquez details the murder of Santiago Nasar at the hands of the Vicario Brothers and the Society’s role in his death. Marquez uses a journalistic and magically realistic style in recounting the events that transpired in the town, using these styles to focus heavily on the societal ideals in the Colombian town. The heavy focus on Catholicism, and the honor that is associated with religion, is the Vicario Brother’s main reason for their murder of Santiago. The townspeople view the Vicario Brother’s as honorable men whose machismo and masculinity justify the killing of Santiago. However,…

Throughout the memoir, there are several circumstances the family undergoes; one significant disruption is the deaths of several family members. In the first chapter, McCourt introduces the situation in which his parents meet and were practically forced into marriage. Angela, Frank’s mother, was pregnant and her cousins suggested marrying was the only option so she would not be looked down upon society. McCourt lived in New York with his family, but moved back to their native land, Ireland, shortly after his baby sister, Margaret, passed away and Angela fell into a deep depression. His use of asyndeton creates a run-on list of his struggles such as “…the poverty; the shiftless loquacious alcoholic father; the pious defeated mother moaning by the fire; pompous priests; bullying schoolmasters; the English and the terrible things they did to us [Irish] for eight hundred long years” (11). The readers can visually construct the image of a beaten mother sitting by the fire place…

The first scene I chose starts when the doctor comes to the McCourt home to examine the baby. When he examined Margaret he said she was gone. Angela could not accept it and showed it by holding the baby, talking to her, and not wanting to give her up. Malachy Sr. was also sad and he showed it by hitting his thighs even though he was drunk. Angela became depressed after the baby’s death. Around that time Francis just learned what death was, when he saw the dead dog on the street. He did not quite understand it or feel it because he was young and innocent along with his brothers. Angela’s cousins Delia and Philomena came because the boys were not being properly taken care of. They later wrote a letter to Angela’s mother so the McCourts can go to Ireland saying that they would be better off. It seemed as if they were glad they got rid of the McCourts because they said “good riddance” when they dropped them off. This changed Francis’ young life dramatically. He has never been to Ireland and does not know how life is over there. If Margaret had not died they would have stayed in New York. They probably would still…

Women were expected to be virgins when they got married. Virginity was considered very sacred because it was supposed to be saved for the man you truly love (your husband). “On the other hand, the fact that Angela Vicario dared put on the veil and the orange blossoms without being a virgin would be interpreted afterwards as a profanation of the symbols of purity” (Marquez 41). Angela represents that being a virgin was very disgraceful; hence the fact that she was returned to her parents after her husband found out that she was deflowered. Divorce was also looked down upon because the woman and man should have taken the time to know each other well before they got…

Angela is a teenage girl who strongly dislikes school and is trying to find her true self, by trying out new things and acting how she never used to. She is pretty selfish because, she dyes her hair red on her own. Also, she brings her new friends, Rayanne and Ricky, to her house without telling her mother about them. Furthermore, Angela decides to quit yearbook suddenly, and leaves the class room on her own convenience. These acts also show that she is a quite unrestrained girl. Also, Angela goes to a night time party that her mother does not agree to. Angela seems to be a negative girl at the beginning because she expressed how she hates school as “battle field for heart” and is like a “prison movie” which does not show anything positive. When she narrates her feelings about her mother, she puts out negative thoughts, such as, “I can’t even look at my mother without even wanting to stab her repeatedly.” She is a delinquent teenager considering the inappropriate clothing she wore, the night when Rayanne invited her to go out. The act of Angela trying out new things…

The accusation process of a crime is often very tedious and at times misleading, but with careful analyzation the true culprit can be revealed. Such an instance occurs in Gabriel García Márquez's journalistic novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, in which Santiago Nasar is indicted of having been the individual responsible for deflowering Angela Vicario prior to her arranged marriage to Bayardo San Roman. This accusation, which is initially stated by Angela Vicario herself, causes a chain of events which ultimately result in the murder of Santiago Nasar by Pedro and Pablo Vicario, Angela’s brothers. Through their actions, the twins act for honor with the intention of freeing their sister of her dishonorable past. After the murder, many townspeople…

Columbian Culture in the First two Chapters “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” is a very poignant and compelling novel written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez it is the story written in an omniscient point of view after the narrator's return to the Colombian town to resolve the details of a murder twenty years after it had taken place. The book has been written in a first person narrative by the narrator arguably as the witness to the events that occurred, sharing all of the characters' thoughts. Marquez’s use of this creative technique and the repeated foretelling of the crime help build the suspense through the first two chapters. The narrative is non-linear In the first two chapters of the novel the reader learns about the protagonist of the story Santiago Nasar, a young man who is thought to have taken the virginity of Angela Vicario and is disliked by the townspeople. The reader to an extent becomes familiar with Columbian culture through the events that occur in this novel "Latin America" is the area that includes all of the Caribbean islands and the mainland that stretches from Mexico to the southernmost tip of South America. It has a very long history since 1492. Mostly Spanish and Portuguese were settled there, Latin American culture was derived from its native inhabitants' traditions. In this novel the esteemed writer Marquez blends and paints the elements of the cultures in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. In the novel the narrator conveyed the sense of powerless of women. The importance of the ritual of courtship is also very evident in Colombian culture. The novel's style is itself a ritual repetition of the events surrounding a crime. In the second chapter the narrator writes that Bayardo will do whatever it takes to win the approval of Angela by showering her with gifts. He decides to marry Angela Vicario, whom he has never met. His courtship of Angela demonstrates the rituals of Latin American marriage culture. The purpose of this courtship ritual is not…
