Battle Royale
The short story Battle Royal from the novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison is from the perspective of an African American man. The main character has a struggle of whether to be himself or to conform to be the black child that white men want him to be. He was immensely affected by the words uttered at his grandfather’s death bed. He said “Son, after I’m gone I want you to keep up the good fight. I never told you, but our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days, a spy in the enemy’s country ever since I give up my gun back in the reconstruction.”(pg.292).The main character realized that the he was falling in the same path as his grandfather and was beloved by the white men. He began to question what it said about him if he was like his grandfather who considered himself a traitor.
The boy in the story was in what seemed to be a lose, lose situation. If he were to listen to his grandfathers advice and be outspoken for equality than dangerous results could follow. But if he allows himself to be belittled and not stand up for what he believes in, then he may never see true freedom. For example the part in the story when he is giving his speech in front of all the white men and cannot seem to say or do what he really wants to. “Well, you had better speak more slowly so we can understand. We mean to do right by you, but you’ve got to know your place at all times. All right, now, go on with your speech.”(pg.302). Like a warden in fear of his prison being overrun by the prisoners, the white men were in fear of letting that young boy mention anything of social equality.
Fear is the greatest power a person or group in a dominant position can have against the weak. Hope is the best thing to counteract fear and they could not allow it. The white men preferred him to be a little robot that just follows order and stays within the boundaries that they decide. It’s because of leaders like Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Booker T. Washington and Frederick

Fredrick Douglass explains in this excerpt from The Narrative Life of Fredrick Douglass that no matter how hard they try, a white person will never understand what its like living the life of a slave. Throughout the excerpt Fredrick Douglass talks about how freedom from slavery is not how he ever imagined it would be. He says that once free, he was lonely and could trust no one, which contradicts all the positive connotations of freedom. This excerpt, in addition to the whole narrative, is aimed at white intelligent people since Fredrick Douglass’s audience could only people who knew how to read and write in 1838. Fredrick Douglass conveys his point through his syntax, imagery, and figures of speech.…

As for Ellison's "Battle Royale " , the title itself conveys that there is a battle between the black and the white people and tells that this battle is of the long kind .He says in the story that it may stay for centuries . The grandfather's scenes at the beginning and at the end of the story emphasize that this long battle is inherited from ancestors to descendents . The narrator of the story sets imagery about himself . He calls himself invisible to declare that he is neglected . No one sees him to let him get his rights and to be dealt with as equal as the white men . Animal imagery is used in the battle scene to represent how…

In the story" Battle Royal", the unnamed narrator believes that genuine obedient will bring him respect and praise from the white men. The reality is opposite to his thought. The white men took advantage of his passivity, forcing him to participate in the barbaric and disorganized battle royal with his 9 black schoolmates. They were blindfolded and pummeled each other viciously to entertain the tipsy and drunk white men who kept yelling. When the unnamed narrator raised his gloved hands to push the layers of white aside voice yelled, "Oh, no you don't! Black bastard! Leave that alone!" (Ellison, 1952, p.288).…

Ralph Ellison’s “Battle Royal” is about how when he was a young African American male he was asked to attend a gathering of the elite white males of society to reiterate a graduation speech he had given at his own graduation. Upon going to the gathering the young boy is face with the games the white men insist he take part in with others of his same race, which the main game is the “Battle Royal” (1043 ). After being forced to take part in some demeaning games the young man, Mr. Ellison himself, is then asked to give his speech that was about how African Americans should act with in society. Upon giving his speech again he begins to awaken to the truth about racial equality, segregation, and humbleness. At first glance one might take this story as a random glimpse into racism of the early 19th century endured by a young boy, but that young man represents black Americans as a whole and the inner battle of how to overcome the suppression of racism and still be true to who they are without becoming invisible in a white man’s society.…

Almost like a puzzle that couldn’t be solved that lay in the back of his mind. At points he found his self resenting his grandfather’s words regardless of the success he obtained. In spite of this, he still could see his self through his actions carrying out his grandfather’s advice of meekness and humility towards the white man. On the narrator’s graduation day he delivered a speech which showed that “humility was the secret, indeed, the very essence of progress.”(248, paragraph 3). For this speech, he gained praise from the white men of the town, because he exhibited the attitude that the white man thought to be “desirable conduct”(248, paragraph 3). He was then invited to give the speech on behalf of the town’s leading officials. Ellison uses the example of the narrator’s speech of humility to show that the white man in that time period can be manipulated. The narrator conveys humbleness in his speech to the white man, without showing any idea of equality to him. In return, the narrator is rewarded and invited to give his speech among more “white men”. This being an achievement that the socially conscious black man pushing for equality would have never accomplished during this time…

Ellison shows us in the story that in order to survive in this war of life, one must know one's place and one's power. The narrator’s grandfather states he had been” a spy in the enemy’s country ever since I gave my gun back in the Reconstruction”(Ellison 315). This shows how the grandfather understood that he was unable to fight in the war against whites because he knew that he was unprepared and disadvantaged. The character knows that logically there’s a greater chance of winning the war if they fight for the more prepared and advantaged side. The narrator struggles with his grandfather’s ideology throughout the…

The white men’s “iron feet of oppression” will reasonably and morally become too demoralizing for a single person to bear, thus, the weariness is inevitable. In addition, it is unanimously recognized by the Negro community that when the Civil Rights Movement is taught in the future, “somebody will have to say, ‘There lived a race of [black] people (…) who had the moral courage to stand up for their rights’” (12). Although Dr. King lacks any solid literary device, he implements his application to pathos, due to the sense of hubris that can be gained from altering history for the better. The unadulterated determination to flourish in an equal civilization, as well as supplement the future history books with a major Negro uprising was enough to initiate the social revolution—and King was well aware of this. In order to solidify the call for action, King persuades the audience that “there comes a time when people get tired of being pushed out of the glittering sunlight of life’s July (…) and left standing amid the piercing chill of November” (9).…

Society in the 1900s was very different in terms of the social status among the American people. In the 1900s, blacks were strongly discriminated against the whites. Discrimination was not against the law as blacks were deemed free but must be segregated against the whites. The idea of a white dominate society was still in existent. Ellison was born (in the year 1914) into this era of racial discrimination and segregation. The story begins with the narrator reminiscing about the past when his grandfather was on his deathbed. The grandfather delivers a speech to the narrator that proves to haunt the narrator for the rest of his life. The grandfather said, “Son, after I'm gone, I want you to keep up the good fight. I never told you, but our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days, a spy in the enemy's country ever since I give up my gun back in the Reconstruction. Live with your head in the lion's mouth. I want you to overcome 'em with yeses, undermine 'em with grins, agree to death and destruction, let 'em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open” (Ellison 258). The narrator was extremely puzzled with the words from his grandfather; he had thought that his grandfather had gone insane. The flashback the narrator has reminds himself of his roots, his grandfather had taunted him with his dying speech for the rest of the narrator’s life. The narrator had been living as a rebel and a traitor…

The tenacity of the African American soldiers and their total dedication to their causes earned them the reluctant respect of the white officers and soldiers. The 54th Regiment was an excellent example of a group of black soldiers who served with distinction and proved that they were as courageous as any white regiment. The 54th Regiment also refused to accept payment until they were paid the same as the white soldier. The refusal spoke volumes about how African American’s were tired of inequality based on the color of their skin.…
