Here is a short outline of the skills you will be working on during our basketball unit.
DRIBBLING
• Use fingerpads (tips) • Bend knees • Keep your head up • Dribble up to your waist • Push ball down (curl fingers around ball-do not slap)
SHOOTING- PUSH SHOT
• Feet in a front to back stance • Bend knees • Use your strong hand-guide hand • Push ball softly in the air • Follow through
PASSING- Chest Pass and Bounce Pass
• Step and stretch • Make the letter W with your fingers when holding the ball • Aim at your receiver’s chest (for chest pass) • Receiver should give you a target (have their hands up ready to catch ball) • Thumbs point down toward ground after you pass ball
SCORING
• A basket is worth 2 points • A basket is worth 3 points if behind the 3 point line • A foul shot is worth 1 point
The History of Basketball
The sport of basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891. He came up with the sport when he was teaching at the YMCA training school in Springfield, Ma. Naismith wanted a sport that people could play during the cold winters. He wanted to invent a different type of game where people needed skill not strength. Therefore, basketball was born. In the very first game soccer balls and peach baskets were used. Players were only allowed to pass the ball. Basketball became an Olymipic sport in 1936 in Berlin. Basketball has progressed greatly over the years all thanks to Dr. James Naismith.

The bottom tip of the ball should be aligned directly under your chin. You should place your dominant hand on the laces of the ball, similar to how a quarterback grips the football. The offhand is the guide hand and is placed on the middle of the ball opposite the dominant hand. The middle finger should be aligned parallel to the seam of the ball, pressing the palm into the ball and forcing it into the power hand. You need to roll and cock the power hand, which forms a slight bend in the wrist, and turns the laces of the ball toward the ground. The placement of the dominant hand is crucial.
