Analysis of a Barnardo’s Advert: Stolen Childhood
Why do charity adverts get complaints? Shocking, inappropriate, offensive- these words are often thrown at charities about their advertising. The Barnardo’s ‘Stolen Childhood’ campaign is typical of charity adverts, which engages people to donate, take action and make changes. Surely this means for people to support this charity, and not something to be complained about? The Barnardo’s campaign has created great controversy. This has made the public disapprove and to some what find disturbing.

This matches the colour of the curtains, and gives me an understanding that the main person living in the house has a sense of style, therefore can live in a decent looking way. Thus the soft colours clash with the situation of the trapped, dark story held between both characters in the image. Her disappointment and fear does not fit in well with the surroundings of the scene, which makes her prominent. Everything is in contrast to each other, the bright clean room to the dark filthy routine he portrays. Yet one may wonder what is really going on behind those doors and drawn curtains, where a little girl is forced to love with a man. There area different levels positioned in this photograph.     This advertisement can be seen as an appeal to emotion due to the fact it is showing a little girl holding hands with two mannequins showing she either has no parents or the parents she has aren’t always easy to talk to. The ad is presented in black and white to show sadness and loneliness. On the ad there is written a phrase, the phrase is: “Every child needs a family.” it is written in a little girl/boys handwriting to show that the message is being conveyed by a child to show the message is coming directly from her/him.     From the muted, sickly green of the walls, to the stark contrast of the blood-red carpet, color plays an important role in setting the tone of this piece. Correspondingly, the colors used in the chief subjects of the painting (young girls, sunflower, carpet) are less organic than the hues used for the more subtle areas of the painting (walls, door, steps). The neutral tones of the background help to “corral” the viewer's eye into looking at the focal point and the action happening around it. In the same token, Tanning’s use of complementary colors allows the red carpet to seemingly “cut” through the painting, providing a perfect backdrop for the vibrancy of the yellow sunflower. The two girls are dressed in white, yet, the figure against the door frame carries semblances from the sunflower and the carpet, represented in her cardigan and the petal she holds. The two lost petals at the foot of the stairs become almost an afterthought when compared to the stark hue of the sunflower, as they are slightly more muted shade of yellow. Finally, the open door at the end of the hallway leaves the viewer with many unanswered questions. Upon first glance, the hazy warm tones may convey a sense of an emblazoned fire, but upon further inspection, it could simply be the light of a hotel lamp flooding the hallway. What is happening behind the door? Is this where the girls came from, and if so will they return?     At the beginning of the story the protagonist despises the wallpaper and wants it removed, but as the story progresses it is the wallpaper that allows her a canvas of opportunity to imagine on. As her creativity flows and her insanity starts to develop, her perceptions are thought to be figurative and she just imagines this character who wants to escape the wallpaper of her bedroom.
