Balibo Scene Analysis
Balibo must be included in the curriculum for a numerous amount of reasons. The film is great for analysis and teaches the students about camera angles. Also Balibo shows with confronting and realistic scenes, what happened during that time. This film makes students think while trying to understand why this occurred.

Balibo has a range of techniques used within the film. The main camera angles used are close ups and over the shoulder shots, showing the emotion within each person and exposing the interaction between two people. The use of colour represents innocence on Roger East and black on Jose representing death. As the film progresses Rogers’s clothes become darker, showing how he has been through a lot and having less innocence as he progresses to find the ‘Balibo 5’.

In case you have not had the chance to watch this film, it is based in Balibo, East Timor. There were five reporters; two from channel nine, and three from channel seven, who went over to East Timor to film and share their stories, however none of them made it home. The emotions that arise from the video are angst, dread, compassion and rebellion. The emotions angst and dread were aroused by the graphics and sound effect of the video in example throughout the video the sound effects where very eerie and fitting to the subtopic discussed at the moment. The whole video is illustrated with graphics that were hand drawn; they were colored in mostly in different shades of black and white to portray a grim and clandestine environment in exception to red which was used to portray blood. An example that the illustrations were used to portray dread and compassion are a drawing the illustrator did of a small child working at a sweat shop and then a drawing of another child scavenging through waste. The emotions compassion and rebellion where influenced by the videos graphics but they were mainly affected by the words chosen to describe offshoring. The choice of vocabulary for the video was calamitous, it made corporations be viewed as destructive entities that the audience needs to stand up against. It chose phrases such as “the vast lawless oceans” (morph,2013) and “the powerful hide options to avoid responsibilities” (morph,2013) to express the corruption corporations seek to better benefit themselves. The…

In the movie of ‘The Outsiders’, there were a lot of camera movements. At the beginning of the film, the music lyrics restate the word gold, the opening tittles in gold and a golden sun. The first shot establishes the setting of the entire setting. The low angle of the camera makes the story seem like a very personal matter that the audience is nosily watching. Then it quickly turns to the Socs, getting back to their car, and pans quickly back to Johnny and Pony. Then, it zooms in on Pony, to show that he is the main character. For example, there were a lot of close-ups. There was a close up of Johnny’s hand on the knife. The effect it had was that kill someone, so the knife symbolized killing. There was also a close up of Bob’s rings. If someone is watching the film for the first time and they see Johnny’s bruises, they would be wondering why he has those bruises on his face. Since they know that Bob is their enemy, so they would then know that it was Bob’s rings that caused the bruises on Johnny’s face. After Johnny ran up to Bob with violence, the screen was red. The red screen was actually blood and blood signifies violence and death. There was also a view of Bob’s body. First they gave a downward view of his body then there was a real close up of his body. We could see that he had blood on his body and he was not moving, so it meant that he was dead.…

The film employs an excellent use of pathos in showing images of boys trekking across the desert while the boys are describing their journeys. The images held my attention in a way that almost possessed me. I couldn’t look away from the emaciated boy who has lost the use of one of his legs, and has to hobble through the dessert with a cane. It was impossible to ignore the little boy who looked to be around eight years old, caring for two small children. These scenes demonstrate their plight in a way that gives their stories a ring of truth, and it made me feel as though I should have known about their situations.…
