Bad Bullies Fail Short Story
Bad Bullies Fail

Hi, I am Ethan, and I am about to get off the bus to begin my three day stay at Atwood. My one and only goal is to not get sent home by behaving badly. When I got there, we unpacked our luggage in a huge area called a dorm. Chris, a worker at Atwood, explained,” A hopper is a job that one of the students will have. Each of the eight tables will have one hopper for every meal. The hopper will be the server and will also provide people with refills on drinks or 2nds. During your stay, everyone will be able to be a hopper.”

After we had a huddle about the rules of Atwood , workers divided us into groups. Every group had 14 kids in it. I was in the Owls group with three very terrible kids, Alex,Joe,and Nick. I wanted to be in the Deer group with all of my friends, but I guess I could make it work.

During the hike, our leader Chris reminded Alex, Joe, and Nick to stop throwing sticks many times. Soon after he warned them, Nick threw a stick at Joe and blamed me for it. I received a level 1. A level 1 is a warning, level 2 is a phone call to your parents, and level 3 is to be sent home. About 30 minutes later, Chris explained,” We are now entering the Kishwaukee River environment. We will be crossing a bridge that leads us to our next environment called the marsh.”

While my group was on the bridge, Alex, Joe, and Nick started to shake the bridge. Chris yelled, ”STOP! Who is doing that?”

Alex, Joe, and Nick had all fingers pointing at me. I earned a level 2. I was scared, I was on my way to get a level 3. During my phone call home, I told my parents, ”Alex, Joe, and Nick are blaming me for things that I was not doing.”

My mom told me, ”Ethan you need to tell a teacher about what is going on and why you have a level

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

At this point I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life after college and I didn’t even know what college I wanted to go to. I did not like the feeling of not knowing what I wanted to do as a career. It would eat at me, so I decided to just hide it away deep down until it would find its way out eventually with the right answer a year and a half later. My classes were consisting of required courses that I had no care for. Back when I was a sophomore, we were required to take chemistry in order to complete high school. My chemistry teacher was the worst. He did not care about my assignments enough to actually take his time and read through them and give me an accurate score on my assignments and tests. No matter how hard or little I tried, he would always give me a score of a D or C, Teachers like him are what cause the students to have this thought of, “No matter how hard I try, I will never be able to better myself, I am worthless in their eyes.”. That’s the message I received when I was handed a sixty percent for my semester grade in that class. That teacher didn’t care about me, he didn’t want to waste his precious time on me. Teachers like him are like the diseases in the education…

They knew that they could get away with it because I had no friends to defend me and I was too meek to defend myself, at the time. This resulted in none of my instructions to the group being followed and the team not making any progress on the tasks assigned to us by our instructor. Facing certain failure, I resorted to letting a teammate named Tom, who had led the group in mocking me, take charge of the patrol.…
