Bacteriological study of drinking water in the Pakistan’s peri-urban areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi

In order to ascertain the water and food quality for human consumption the microbial contamination was analyzed in a prospective study which was conducted in collaboration with National Institute of
Health, Islamabad. This surveillance work was carried out during the months of July to August in the peak of the summer season. In order to evaluate the objective parameters for assessment of the public health concerns in the peri-urban areas of both Islamabad and Rawalpindi. A cross section of total 108 water samples from different sources was analyzed by standard microbiological methods. To estimate the amount of faecal coliforms in water samples, the most probable number (MPN) technique was used and it was found that amongst the total water samples (68.5%) had total viable count and (39.9%) were positive for Escherichia coli. This study highlighted the poor hygienic conditions of the water quality standards in this area of investigation. The related endemic health problems can be checked by taking appropriate preventive measures to forestall the major outbreak in the future.

    Background: According to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2012, 783 million people, or 11 per cent of the global population, remain without access to an improved source of drinking water. Also the United Nations has long been addressing the global crisis caused by insufficient water supply to satisfy basic human needs and growing demands on the world’s water resources to meet human, commercial and agricultural needs (un.org). In this experiment water quality and contamination of groundwater was investigated. First, I observed the effects that many pollutants have on groundwater. I predict that in this experiment the oil and vinegar will create the large amount of contamination in the water, while the laundry detergent will just create an aroma smell to it. Considering the smells and color to these ingredients I think that it will cause the water quality to have a bad smell and cause the water to be very cloudy. Once filtering the contaminated water, the water will be clear and purified. Second, I will experiment water treatment and filtering. I predict that once the contaminated water is treated and filtered that it will leave me with less contamination or none at all. Then for the last experiment, I will determine the difference between bottled water and tap water to discover any contamination. I predict that the tap water will be the most contaminated and with the most chemicals in it, while the bottled waters; Dasani and Fiji will be completely filtered and free of any chemicals.…

    Water is usually tested for safety by using fecal coliforms (primary Escherichia coli) as an indicator of fecal contamination. The validity of this approach has recently been questioned. Why? Should it be used? The validity is questioned because "basing decisions on total numbers of ‘Coliform’ bacteria or ‘Fecal Coliforms’ is not supported by current science. These days, there is a lot of talking and a lot of confusion. It may be helpful to look at Figure 1 and realize that all ‘Fecal Coliforms’ are also ‘Coliforms’ and some Fecal Coliforms are non-pathogenic E. coli and some are pathogenic and toxigenic E. coli . Some pathogens, such as Salmonella are ‘Coliforms’ but don’t give a positive result in tests for “Fecal Coliforms’."
