• Who invented the computer?
• What is computer?
• How did the computer evolve?
• Where did it start?

Charles Babbage, a British professor mathematics is the man who invented the first computer in 1837. It was basically an mechanical type of calculator that also had a memory. The computer was powered by steam engine and used punched cards for programming.
A computer is a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic or logical operations. Since a sequence of operations can be readily changed, the computer can solve more than one kind of problem.
Conventionally, a computer consists of at least one processing element, typically a central processing unit (CPU) and some form of memory. The processing element carries out arithmetic and logic operations, and a sequencing and control unit that can change the order of operations based on stored information. Peripheral devices allow information to be retrieved from an external source, and the result of operations saved and retrieved.
The first modern computer was invented during World War II. It was invented by a team of scientist and engineers at the University of Pennsylvania. It was actually a general purpose digital calculator called the ENIAC.
The computer first started with a machine that could calculate math problems known as a calculator to us today, but known as the difference engine to Charles Babbage in 1833. The main purpose of the machine was to calculate astronomical tables. The machine was never built because the government ignored his ideas. In 1940 an idea of the Analytical machine, which claimed could perform any mathematical calculation. The machine was built but there were too many bugs and defects that made the machine incompatible of doing a lot of mathematics.

Computers have become one of our necessities in our daily life which makes it so hard to imagine a time when they did not really exist. And the birth of first computer occurred in 1950. It was the Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator or ENIAC. It was made out of 18,000 vacuum tubes which made it to consume about 180,000 watts of electrical power. However, it was only capable to give function such as multiplying numbers rapidly. Due to rapid growth in population, Census Bureau of United States decided to have a machine to tabulate the data, hence,…

In 1944 the very first electronic- mechanical computer called MARK 1 was created at Harvard. This machine was a massive calculator that was fifty one feet wide and eight feet tall (Chee, 1997). The beginning of the smaller computers that we know today started in 1959 when Honeywell developed the first computers that used transistors. These were followed by IBM who used integrated circuits. The very first personal computers were built in the 1970’s with the computers that are recognizable today starting in 1974 with…

Computer: We are living in the age of modern science. We can see the creation and invention of science all around us. From morning till we go to bed at night we use the invention of science. Computer is one of the greatest and valuable invention of modern science. The word “Computer” came from the Latin word “computatrum”. Basically, computer is an electronic device which has the capability of receiving command and turning the command into result. Computer has also the capability to manipulate, save and retrieve data or information. A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control of instructions (software) stored in its own memory unit, that can accept data (input), manipulate data (process), and produce information (output) from the processing. Generally, the term is used to describe a collection of devices that function together as a system.…

Charles Babbage, an English mechanical engineer and polymath, originated the concept of a programmable computer. Considered the "father of the computer",[4] he conceptualized and invented the first mechanical computer in the early 19th century. After working on his revolutionary difference engine, designed to aid in navigational calculations, in 1833 he realized that a much more general design, an Analytical Engine, was possible. The input of programs and data was to be provided to the machine via punched cards, a method being used at the time to direct mechanical looms such as the Jacquard loom. For output, the machine would have a printer, a curve plotter and a bell. The machine would also be able to punch numbers onto cards to be read in later. The Engine incorporated an arithmetic logic unit, control flow in the form of conditional branching and loops, and integrated memory, making it the first design for a general-purpose computer that could be described in modern terms as Turing-complete.[5][6]…

Blaise Pascal is usually credited for building the first digital computer in 1642. It added numbers entered with dials and was made to help his father, a tax collector. In 1671, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz invented a computer that was built in 1694. It could add, and, after changing some things around, multiply. Leibniz invented a special stepped gear mechanism for introducing the addend digits, and this is still being used.…
