Film Analysis: Babel

Babel: Yet Silence According to the dictionary the word Babel means a confusion of many voices or many languages. “Babel” takes place in Morocco, North America, Mexico and Tokyo where many different languages are spoken throughout the movie. The main theme of the movie is lack of communication and miss-communication amongst the characters. The film is divided into four parts: the American couple, the shooter kid, the Japanese girl, the two Americans children’s nursery maid that brings them to her sons weeding in Mexico. Each of these stories is close to the other, and the causes of each story are from the people’s distrust and misunderstandings. The movie Babel is a profound work about the human condition of not listening and the consequences of the misunderstanding that follows. The story of Babel in Genesis recounts man 's effort to become equal with God and build a tower that reached to the heavens. God, angry at man 's arrogance, confounded man 's communication with different languages. This movie, however, suggests that it is not the barrier of language that creates humanity 's lack of communication, but the barrier of not listening and not loving. The Four counter locking stories all connected by a single gun all converge at the end and reveal a complex and tragic story of the lives of humanity around the world and how we truly aren 't all that different. In Morocco, troubled married couples are on vacation trying to work out their differences. Meanwhile, a Moroccan herder buys a rifle for his sons so they can keep the jackals away from his herd. A girl in Japan dealing with rejection, the death of her mother, the emotional distance of her father, her own self-consciousness, and a disability among many other issues, deals with modern life in the enormous metropolis of Tokyo, Japan. Then, on the opposite side of the world the married couple 's Mexican nanny takes the couple 's two children with her to her son 's wedding in Mexico, only to come into
