BMC Robert Craighead: Leadership Analysis
Leadership is a lifestyle that I work on everyday, it’s an ongoing process and like anything in life it takes practice in order to become better at it. A good leader is someone who inspires others and motivates them to work hard, achieve success and accomplish a common goal not just for themselves, but for the better of the team (the bigger picture). Leadership is about action and commitment to the cause. Great leaders encourage others, coach, mentor and overall have a positive influence on people’s lives. My Officer in Charge at motor lifeboat Station Merrimack River, BMC Robert Craighead was someone that was very influential and instilled a passion in me to become an OIC. His leadership style inspired me to always look out for my …show more content…
This does not mean unnecessary risks however; I need to instill the notion that it’s ok to try new things even if we fail at times. I am going to work on being open to ideas that may be outside the box and solicit more ideas from the crew in order to accomplish a task. Secondly, I would like to sit down with members of the crew more often in order to get a pulse check on how we as a unit are doing. By engaging them and asking them for some candid feedback I can improve on areas that they may have ideas for. This will also give the crew more buy in to their roles and ownership within the unit helping with our long-term vision. Lastly, I am going to work on finishing my bachelor degree to help post Coast Guard opportunities. By doing this I hope to inspire others at the unit to reach their long-term goals, pushing them to strive and reach higher within the organization.
My leadership philosophy is similar to my command philosophy. Take care of our people they are our services most valuable asset. Operate as a team; we shall have a high level of mutual respect for each other. I expect us to all learn about each other and learn from each other. Set the example on and off duty and try your best. Lastly, have some fun. This is a fantastic organization with great people; enjoy your time because it goes by

According to the Coast Guard’s Leadership Development Framework, leadership is the ability to influence others to obtain their obedience, respect, confidence, and loyal cooperation. I believe that leadership is simply guiding others to succeed. When I think of leadership influences during my career I think of one excellent example, and one example of what I never wanted to be. The first influence was the guidance I was given when I started on Active Duty after September 11th, 2001. My job was to administratively support about 25 Reservists who were called up on Title 10 orders at MSU Wilmington. I had no experience and had only been in the Coast Guard a few years. The Warrant Officer at MSU Wilmington was the best mentor I could have ever asked for. She was tough, consistent, and the most knowledgeable yeoman I had ever been around. She never gave me answers, but made me think and research. She challenged me in so many ways. I cared deeply about the customer service and care my Reservists received. Now when I see those guys they often remark about how I took care of them and helped them, but it is all because of the Warrant who empowered me. The negative…

The predominant worldview of leadership is that it is an opportunity to tell others what to do, and to control outcomes for personal gain or reputation enhancement. I do not share this view. I believe all leadership boils down to one word; influence. True leaders, those that serve others, are people who have a clear vision of what the future will be like and then work cooperatively with others to see and move toward a shared future. This is the essence of the leadership style that Jesus Christ modeled for us. He showed us a great vision for our future and then works intimately in our lives to help us on our journey toward that vision.…

My leadership philosophy is simple… to provide great service to every person you encounter (Soldier or Civilian). We are an Army value based unit, and customer service organization and we need to conduct ourselves as such with everything we do. We are caring for Soldiers and their family members. When we care for their family members it ensures the Soldiers will work with high morale as family support gets stronger. We want all our customers that walk through our doors to feel important. The effort that we all do every day does matter, no matter what the job. We all contribute to the mission, as we are one team with a common goal, to serve. There is not any one job that is more important than the other. We are only as strong as our weakest link and if one fails to perform the mission, we all fail because we are not providing the best customer service.…

I hold myself, and those around me to the strictly adherence of the seven Army Values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage.
