Abstract
Snow avalanches are a constant hazard in the Alps, threatening tourists and inhabitants. The objective of this thesis is to research the linkages between avalanche danger, avalanche mitigation strategies and climate and environmental change in Serfaus, Austria. For this purpose, it presents a literature review and the application of a Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) modeled avalanche hazard map. It is found that climate change will cause lower temperatures and fluctuations in temperature and precipitation in the Alps. Environmental change will occur because of the increase in winter tourism and cause deforestation and erosion. These effects of climate and environmental change will cause an increase in avalanche danger, which calls for development in avalanche mitigation strategies. The results demonstrate that GIS hazard mapping is an essential component in the first level of avalanche mitigation strategies: research and prediction.

A hazard is a situation that poses a level of threat to life, health, property, or environment. There is a very big difference that helps prepare for a volcanic hazard and that is whether you are in a MEDC or a LEDC. In a MEDC monitoring volcanic zones and potential hazards is an option many LEDC’s don’t have. In Italy at Mt Etna they have Geochemical monitoring programs currently run by INGV which focus on the analysis of temporal changes, chemical changes and seismic activity.…

Sep. 4, 2013 — A recent study of one of California's most devastating wildland fires by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) strongly suggests that measures for reducing structural damage and property loss from wildland urban interface (WUI) fires are most effective when they are based on accurate assessments of exposure risks both for individual structures and the community as a whole.…

The Hazard Mitigation Plan for Douglas County, Minnesota lists tornadoes as being the highest risk for a disaster in the county (Douglas County, 2015). According to the Tornado History Project, the largest tornado in the Douglas County area was an F4 in 2010 that caused 5 injuries and 1 death (n.d.). Tornadoes have the potential to create widespread damage and destruction as well as physical injuries and death as a result of high winds, flying debris, and compromised infrastructure. The Fujita Damage Scale rates tornadoes based upon the damage that is caused and they range from a F0 which causes light damage such as branches and damaged signs to a F5 which can destroy large buildings (Fujita, n.d.). In 2015, Douglas County had seven tornados, three were classified as F1 and four were classified as F0 (Tornado Information, n.d.). The…

Volcanic hazards can be detrimental to the lives of the people who live near the active zone of the volcano in question due to their immense power coming from the centre of the earth however with effective management of the risks the number of deaths, disrupted lives and the economic damage can be reduced greatly. An example I will use of a recent volcano that erupted was Mt St Helens which is an active supervolcano located in Washington, USA - 96 miles south of the city of Seattle and 50 miles northeast of Portland. Clearly there is an active community of people living in close proximity of the volcano, at risk from ashfall and spewing lava.…

Volcanic activity happens across the surface of the globe and naturally hazards occur too. A hazard is a situation that poses a level of threat to life, health, property, or environment. It is easy to locate volcanoes, but it is very difficult to predict exactly when activity will take place, particularly a major eruption, this makes it difficult to prepare or plan for one. There is a very big difference that helps prepare for a volcanic hazard and that is whether you are in a MEDC or a LEDC. In a MEDC monitoring volcanic zones and potential hazards is an option many LEDC’s don’t have. In Italy at Mt Etna they have Geo-monitoring programs which focus on the analysis of any changes. This option open to the Italians is not an option for LEDC who don’t have the wealth or public education to set up these stations. The Colombian volcano, Nevado del Ruiz, came to life in late 1984 with small-scale activity. Volcanologists from the US knew the danger a major eruption could pose to the surrounding area, but were unable to predict when the major event would take place because of a lack of resources. Small-scale volcanic activity continued for several months and people were not prepared to evacuate their homes on the basis of this threat. MEDC can greatly reduce the hazards of a volcano in lots of ways. These include creating an exclusion zone around the volcano, being ready and able to evacuate residents and having an emergency supply of basic provisions, such as food.…

The snow and wind from a blizzard can cause roadblocks and traffic. Blizzards can cause whiteouts, which makes it hard to see in the snow and can also cause power outages from the snow and wind disabling the power stations. Staying out in a blizzard can result in a frostbite or hypothermia. Hypothermia is when one has an abnormally low body temperature, typically one that is dangerously low.…

Small Avalanches is narrated by a 13 year old girl who you find out is named Nancy. She lives in a small town in the early 1900’s I would guess. Nancy goes to her uncles shop where he repairs cars, and gets a soda pop. She describes how she loves it when the soda man comes to collect the change from the machines. While she is at the shot with her uncle she asks if her cousin Georgia is around, and she is not. A man in a white car drives up while they are talking and makes small talk with her uncle. Nancy decides at this point to walk home. On the way back home the man in the white car drives up and asks her for a ride, which she finds odd, so she refuses. This does not make the man go away and he decides to pull his car over and walk with her. This doesn’t seem to sit well with Nancy. She walks ahead of him the whole time because she is nervous. The man is nice and compliments her beauty, and constantly smiles, making the reader wonder if he doesn’t have some sort of perverse motif. They come to a short cut where Nancy says goodbye, but the man says he will follow. They climb the shortcut through the woods it seems, the whole time Nancy making sure to stay ahead of the man while continues to ask her questions and make her laugh. When they near the end of the shortcut, the man trips and falls. Nancy taunts him thinking its a joke, but the mans demeanor changed. He becomes pale and sick looking, and says he feels sick. Instead of helping the man Nancy runs home, and is scolded by her mother for being home late.…
