Autism Speaks: Community Analysis
I completed my community service for the Autism Speaks U 5K run/3K walk, which was located at Kendrick Park in downtown Amherst. The mission of this organization is to spread awareness and fund research for autism, and there are 4 pillars which are research, awareness, advocate, and family services. This organization serves children with autism who live anywhere in the nation and are the younger demographic, but can be any race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and group identity. I am different from the people served because I do not have autism, but I understand that it is a disorder that is not very well understood, so it is monumental to try to change that by finding causes and treatments for autism to help families of children suffering …show more content…
It improves intellectual wellness because seeking new experiences and challenges is healthy and encourages you to get outside your comfort zone by participating in scholastic, cultural, and community activities that will help you learn about others and yourself. Spiritual wellness results when you find meaning and purpose in your niche in the community; rather than focusing all your efforts on yourself, you realize there is a bigger world out there that needs your talent and skill and you find that working in a community is very meaningful and worthwhile. Being connected to a community also improves occupational wellness, because if you love what you do, then you are more motivated to achieve even greater work every day and not limit yourself. It improves social wellness because you learn to develop encouraging relationships with peers, create a support network, and perform social roles effectively and comfortably. Emotional wellness is also benefited because you begin to realize that your stresses are not unique to you, and there are people who understand what you are going through which can help ease the stress you are currently dealing with. Physical wellness can be impacted as well, since being involved in a community makes you want to stay healthy and be an active participant, and others’ health habits can influence your own decisions. Two things I learned in implementing my community service project that I may be able to use in the future are that volunteers are a significant part of the community, and that it doesn’t take special skills to work as a volunteer, but it is important to bring your enthusiasm and have an open mind. If I could volunteer with any organization in the world and work for any cause, it would be to work for Best Friends Animal Society, which seeks to end the

I remember when I was younger I had to go visit the doctor for all my sport related injuries. The doctors always put your best effort into making me feel better and I was resort I was so indebted to them, even though my insurance paid them for their services I was morally indebted to them because of their kind efforts. As a result, during the summer of 2012 I began volunteering at the Lower Keys Medical Center. I felt it was important to help the nurses and the intensive care unit because of all of the duties they have on their plate, they should not be held responsible for all the minor ones. I continued to volunteer at the Lower Keys Medical Center throughout my second third and fourth year of high school because I truly Felt like I was making a difference in these patients lives.…

Social impacts of volunteering are technically tangible because it betters your life and connections, but there are also aspects that the individual volunteer can take away such as workplace experience and health benefits. Workplace experience allows you to strengthen your resume, allowing you to get a better occupation. The most common skills gained are networking, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Networking is an important skill to have as it can supply you with future recommendations. Volunteering gives you a chance to meet people in charge as well as other volunteers that can help in the job market. The leadership skills are gained through supporting and caring for your participants. You gain leadership both in the organization you…

I remember when we hosted the Make a difference day event for Thurgood Marshall. It was a busy day for all of us. It was also a big event. There were a lot of vacant houses in that area. Our job was to make a list of the vacant houses and to measure it for board-ups. Measuring it took about a week. Lighting observation was a challenge for some of us because we had to wait till dark to find out which light works so that we can write down the address. Some people didn’t like how we were going around the same area multiple times because they didn’t know what we were trying to do. After that some of us had to drive around morning and afternoon to find out the most common routes that everyone takes to go and from school. I couldn’t participate in that because I had school the same time. On the big event day, we secured 10 vacant properties, cleared three blocks of trash, removed a block of graffiti from a vacant property, and created visible safe routes signs. We hit some rough patches on the way but we all worked together to overcome it. It was a very long and exhausting day but we all were happy because we all felt the joy of making a difference in the…

Following the incident, I began to immerse myself with opportunities of service and involvement. In addition to helping myself, I wanted to be a reason for another’s joy. Every week I spent time with my school’s Special Education program in hosting events and activities to make them inclusive. Within our first year, I was able to help begin a Special Olympics for my peers to participate in. However, I was also determined to impact the community outside of my school. For a project that I led press relations with, our Key Club’s Louisiana Strong Campaign was able to acquire more than 1,225 items within a month for victims of the Louisiana flooding. My years in service have brought me to understanding the content I receive when being able to bring fulfillment to others. As well, both of these projects represented that although I am only an individual, it only takes one person to be a catalyst of relief for many.…

This is a qualitative study of courtesy stigma among 32 parents of autistic children. The results show that autism has uniquely stigmatizing aspects as it extremely disruptive nature of autistic symptoms, the typical physical appearance of autistic children, and absence of public knowledge and accepting the nature of autism. Most parents perceived themselves to be judged by their child's disorder. There was a strong trend for mothers to feel more stigmatized than fathers. Parents with more severely disabled children and children who were under the age of twelve were more likely to see themselves to be stigmatized (Gray, 1993).…

I volunteered at Immaculate Conception school for the program called Project T.H.I.N.K. Immaculate Conception school is a charter school located in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles. The school teaches children from kindergarten through eighth grade. I have volunteered at so many different organizations that included working with food, working with animals, and even with books at the library. I have never volunteered with kids before that included growing relationships with them. I chose this site because professionally I want to be a Pediatric Nurse. I also felt that this is a great opportunity to finally gain experience with kids. I also chose this site because it is only 10 minutes away from the Doheny campus. I only need to take the bus by the school and I get dropped off right by the school. This volunteer…

According to Mayo Clinic, Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorders. Its symptoms include lack of communication, the inability to use language to interact, and certain repetitive behaviors. Jeffrey S. Gerber and Paul A. Offit in their work “Vaccines and Autism” studied whether autism can be caused by MMR vaccines, thimerosal preservative, or due to multiple vaccines. The researchers created three different hypothesis and collected its data from different countries worldwide. They concluded in their study that autism disorder is neither caused by MMR vaccine nor Thimerosal containing vaccines nor by the multiple vaccines. Based on my knowledge, and experience, I agree with the findings of Gerber and Offit that childhood vaccines do not cause…

Autism, or a disorder of social and functional challenges, affects about one in every sixty-eight children in the world today (‘Facts about ASD’). The cause of autism has not yet appeared to scientists, but they have found ways to prevent it through pregnancy. My personal experience with autism showed me what the condition does to the person and to their families, and through my research, I discovered that scientists have found ways to overcome autism and its affects.…

Autism now effects one in every 110 children. Also, more children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined. To understand autism, think of the most complicated aspect of our universe, and then multiply that by infinity. Autism affects the brain's ability to develop social and communication skills. The way the media presents it, you would think that autism is autism, but that is not true. In fact, autism is actually a collection of diagnoses, each a little different from the others. It is one of five developmental disabilities known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD includes Asperger's syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD-NOS), autistic disorder, Rett's syndrome, and childhood disintegrative…

Autism is a disability that affects thousands of children today. The causes are yet to be known but there are many theories floating around as to how children develop this disorder. More importantly than how they have gotten the diagnosis, is what can be done do to help them thrive in their educational environment. Many of these children are staring school and are faced with an entirely new set of challenges other than adjusting to life in a home setting. There are many common characteristics that children with autism exhibit; educators must be aware of these traits and understand the best way to deal with them and other needs required by the students due to this disability. It is vital to be knowledgeable in the best teaching strategies and have access to support services and aids available to give children with this disorder the tools needed to achieve success along with their non-disabled peers.
