One of the flaws Bradbury points out in Fahrenheit 451 is censorship. Censorship occurred repeatedly throughout the course of history. The most apparent source of censorship in the novel is book burning. During World War II, Nazi Germany burnt many books as a form of censorship, one example is when “university students in 34 university towns across Germany burned over 25,000 books” (“Book Burnings” 1). Censorship is shown throughout the novel by books being burned and the job of the…

Imagine a society in which books are nonexistent, where it is impossible for someone to spend an evening losing himself, or herself, in an enticing novel. This situation is made real in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, where it is illegal to have and read books. In the society of Bradbury’s book, if a person is caught owning books, his or her house and belongings could be burned down by the likes of Guy Montag, a fireman in Bradbury’s novel. Due to the ban on books, the people in this society are distant in their emotions and thoughts. The absence of books in the society make people ignorant in their decision making and way of living. Books became illegal in Montag’s society because they made people different, which is viewed as dangerous to their wellbeings. Despite this reason, books should be kept in society and not be eradicated.…
The contemporary critic Neil Postman contrasts George Orwell’s vision of the future, as expressed in the novel 1984, as well as Aldous Huxley’s in the Brave New World. Orwell makes assumptions about society as a whole, that by the year 1984 a totalitarian government would take over the country. In Orwell’s novel, society is revealed as a dark vision of the future “controlled by inflicting pain”. On the other hand in Huxley’s novel, Huxley fears that what we love will ruin us and society is “controlled by inflicting pleasure”. Postman’s assertion that Huxley’s vision of the future is more relevant today than Orwell’s is correct as revealed by society’s rising need for instant gratification for technology, as well as the need for distractions from important concepts.…
