Authentic Leadership
Authentic leadership is the practice of building trust through honesty, transparency, and self-awareness. Authentic leaders have strong values and always consider the ethical and moral consequences of their actions. Furthermore, they carefully weigh options and others’ viewpoints before making decisions (Regan, Laschinger, & Wong, 2016; Fusco, O’Riordan, & Palmer, 2016). Based on the results of the Seven Habits Profile (2017), I believe many of my traits align with authentic leadership.
The cumulative score of Category 9 of the Seven Habits Profile (2017) suggests I have an outstanding ability to attempt to understand others’ points of view. Yasinski (2014) described, “[a]uthentic leaders develop heart and compassion in those around them by

Those three categories focus on intrinsic characteristics as well as interactions with others to synergize and create winning solutions for everyone (Seven Habits Profile, 2017). I attempt to be kind to everyone, even strangers, for I usually assume my words and actions can change a person’s day, or even life. As such, I genuinely care about others’ success and use a combination of honesty, compassion, and creativity to identify strengths, weaknesses, and solutions. Years ago, I was a manager-in-training at a retail store. My immediate manager vented to me one day about the assistant manager: She was “lazy,” looked sloppy, and was not responsive to criticism. My reaction was to talk honestly with the assistant manager—I could not just passively watch her fail. I explained her position with the company was in jeopardy. I questioned what was going on in her life to negatively affect her work performance and encouraged her to share how we did not meet her needs at work. Finally, I asked her to work with me and our boss to establish goals for all of us. I believe my authenticity inspired her, as she quickly improved and was promoted within a few

I was always considered as being a bit of a 'soft touch' when I was younger, constantly letting others have their way. In my older life, and particularly within my job role, this has taught me that I can be emphatic and sympathetic towards people. I have always been interested in history, including my own family history. When I was young, I would sit for hours on end listening to grandmas stories of her own background and where she came from. This has given me a sense of my own self and has taught me how to be a good listener with the people that I care for in my working life.…

4.1 Authentic Leadership: All 3 ‘They are more interested in empowering the people they lead to make a difference, than they are for power, money and self-prestige.’ This is how William George defined an authentic leader in 2003. This perhaps also relates to Avolio et al. (2004)’s definition that Authentic Leaders are ‘those who are deeply aware of how they think and behave’…’perceived by others as being aware’…’ aware of the context in which they operate.’…

Authentic leadership deals partly with the relationship with oneself as a leader. Following and relying on one’s own instincts and judgements to lead others and do what is best for an organization. Luthans and Avolio (2003) as mentioned by Northouse, provided traits that may influence a leader to become an authentic leader; “confidence, hope, optimism and resilience” (p.265). At some time, I think we all have had a leader that did not possess most of these. If more leaders embodied these attributes or strived to have more, organization would be better off. Northouse likened authentic leaders with servant leaders and transformational leader as well; styles that emphases doing the right thing (Northhouse 2013, p.268). Authentic leaders need to be true to themselves and act in the best interest of the ones they lead. Their concern is not with how prestigious they are or that they are the most important person in an organization, but the job is done correctly and the business benefits from their…

Empathy refers to the ability to understand someone else’s point of view and ideas. When a client feels understood, and they think you are more understanding to their point of view, they are more likely to accept and listen to new ideas. Being genuine is the expression of true feelings. Being genuine can be of big usefulness to people in the human services industry. It is important to also be objective. Seeing things from an outside point of view can help the human services worker to be subjective. Self-awareness is the quality of knowing oneself. It seems after careful analysis of literature the research presented in this paper points to authentic leadership as being the superior leadership style and is associated with the most positive outcomes. However this style of leadership is more so suited when used in correlation with other leadership styles i.e. transactional and charismatic and differs from the other leadership styles by possessing mechanisms of multiplicity. Charismatic and transactional leaders can be seen as authentic but authentic is not defined as being any one particular style of leader per se(Avolio & Gardner, 2005). Authentic leaders manifest themselves in different ways depending on their place in the world and the climate they are dealing with(Ms & Rita, 2011). Authentic leaders are…

I may not be perfect, but I do have many redeeming qualities. Some of these qualities include my determination, my ability to learn quickly, and being able to be friendly with most people. I show these traits often in my everyday life. I keep trying at activities that I may not be very good at because I am determined and want to be better, such as working on computers. It does help, though, that I learn quickly because I can figure out what is wrong or what needs to be done more easily. Unlike these two qualities, however, my ability to be friendly towards most people does not just affect my personal life, it also affects those around me. These are all great qualities to have, but they do not really tell what I have done or accomplished.…
