Courage is shown in the novel in different ways by the three of them.

Atticus is probably the most courageous character of the novel. Since Scout narrates the story and defends her dad when he stood up for a black man in court, she admires her father, she describes with detail his qualities, many which involve courage. According to atticus,

Instead of biting her tongue, scout made the courageous decision to stand up and take the punishment of first using her words to defend her dad and then her fist. Another way she show courage is when she stood up to her teacher that told her she isn’t aloud to read anymore because she was ahead of her class. Scout stood up for the fact that she believed it was wrong and felt she didn’t need to stop reading because her dad reads to her all the time.

The last person out of the three that showed a lot of courage was Jem. He stood up for his dad also when Cecil Jacobs was calling him bad names and he stepped in while scout was yelling at him. Jem shows courage by rebelling with actions and words to the people that are saying and doing mean things to his family members or love ones no matter the

Scout was also hesitant with some of her ideas. Including when Jem wanted her to play his game “Boo Radley”, and Scout eventually went with Jem for his game.…

As Jem and Scout grow up in the Maycomb community, they begin to learn and understand people’s views in the community and how they contradict their father Atticus’s views. The largest part of the courage is presented in Atticus as he is fighting a lost battle. Characters that appear later also present courage such as Boo Radley and Mrs. Dubose. Jem demonstrated acts of courage in many ways throughout the novel. A good example would be when Dill made a bet with Jem for him to touch the Radley house. Jem showed courage here as he took on the bet although he was frightened but decided to go along with it to show that he was courageous. Later in chapter 6, Jem (accompanied by Dill) got close enough to the Radley house to actually look inside the window. This shows courage as Jem and Dill know that theres a chance of getting caught. (Which they did). Later in the same chapter Jem Returned to the Radley Place to get back his pants which is yet another act of courage. This was fuelled by the possible disappointment of Atticus once Jem would have had to explain to him what happened. To not disappoint and face up to Atticus, Jem had no choice but to return to the Radley house being fully aware of the dangers once again. Five…
