Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a hardening and narrowing of the arteries. It is the process in which deposits of gritty, fatty, oat-meal substances are deposited on the walls of large and medium arterial vessels. The deposits damage the endothelial lining of vessel walls, the lining is a thin layer of cells that help keep the inside of arteries toned and smooth and helps to keep the blood flowing. When the lining is damaged platelets and white blood cells accumulate in the area causes further restriction of blood flow. Eventually these deposits can harden to cause a hard greyish plaque or yellow mound of tissue. This can eventually lead to thrombosis or blood clots.
