1- Introduction and Background of Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad
Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad was established in 1996 at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, it was also the beginning of Malaysia East Asia Satellite (MEASAT) with the launch of satellite named MEASAT-1 by Astro. At first Astro introduced pay-television service and started broadcasting with twenty two TV Channels (Astro website). Latter in 1998 Astro launched more MEASAT satellites to expand its business and services and now Astro is the foremost consumer media entertainment group in Malaysia and are running operations in four key areas of business, which are Pay TV, Radio, Publications and Digital Media (Astro website).
Astro also recognized by the name of Astro All Asia Network (AAAN). According to Kong and Chan (2012), Astro was listed in October 2013 under public listed companies by Main Board of Bursa Malaysia, but latter in June 2010, AAAN was delisted from the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia and in 19th October, 2012, Astro relisted under Bursa Malaysia (OSK, 2012).
After relisted again under Bursa Malaysia, according to Yin (2012), Astro are enjoying monopoly market with 99% of the market share and also Astro is the largest pay TV operator not only in Malaysia but also in South East Asia with total 3.3 million subscribers, among these 3.2 million are residential subscribers as shown in chart-1. Below given table1 summarizing the earning of profit and revenue by Astro and also chart-2 summarizes development of Atro’s products and service (Maybank KE, 2012).
