Asteroid Persuasive Speech
Asteroids. That word might make you cringe, shiver in terror, or hide. It certainly wouldn’t help for you to know that an Asteroid, the size of three and a half football fields might collide with Earth in the near future. The Asteroid might even collide with Earth in your lifetime. In 2029, there is a 2.7 percent chance of Apophis hitting Earth, says NASA. Further ahead in the future, in 2039, Apophis will pass by Earth again, even closer than in 2029. Our government is already making preparations for Apophis. One such example is Australia sending up a space shuttle and shooting Apophis with paintballs to slow Apophis’s descent or even draw it off course. NASA says that objects greater than 1 mile could hit the Earth in the near future,

I absolutely had to use a photo of Princess Diana because I was a huge fan of hers. I remember watching her wedding on television when I was a young child, and I cried like a baby when she met her untimely demise. I don't recall every crying like that when a celebrity died, but she was my heroine and I loved her! Since then I've kept up with the ins and outs of the Royal Family and the shenanigans of Prince Harry, my now favorite Prince. He is a Princess Diana reincarnated in the male form. Lives by his own rules and with not a care in the world. Madison and I were able to visit the Madame Tussauds London museum while on our trip to London just recently, thanks to the kind folks of Merlin Entertainment. Since this is most likely the only way we'll ever get to the meet the Royal Family we just had to do it. Now if you're thinking all wax museums are the same, well Madame Tussauds London is on a whole new level of awesome. I've…

In early July of 1947, most likely around July 4th or 5th, something crashed to the Earth in the high desert of eastern New Mexico (Carey & SChmitt, 2009). Mac Brazel, a ranch hand on the J.B. Foster ranch, went to check on his sheep one morning after a series of severe thunderstorms. He was concerned about the wellbeing of his cattle because he heard a very loud explosion the night before during the storm. Upon riding out to the pastures, Brazel discovered a huge amount of strange debris scattered across the fields. Not knowing what this strange debris was, Brazel gathered some of it and showed it to his friends…

Aliens coming to earth is a topic constantly being used for books and movies, from the full out war for survival in Independence Day, to the cute aliens who didn’t mean any harm in Home. “Forget about flying saucers and little green men and giant mechanical spiders spitting out death rays. Forget about epic battles with tanks and fighter jets and the final victory of us scrappy, unbroken, intrepid humans over the bug-eyed swarm. That’s about as far from the truth as their dying planet was from our living one. The truth is, once they found us, we were toast. (page 2)” Rick Yancey uses this statement in his novel The 5th wave to create an original approach on an alien invasion.…

I am writing you today to ask for your support. This year, on Saturday, August 5, I will be riding in my first Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), from Wellesley to Bourne. The PMC raises money for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. My employer, Waters Technologies Corporation, is sponsoring a team for the first time, so I decided to join “Team Waters.” I will be riding in honor of my Mom, a breast cancer survivor and in memory of my sister, Jayne, who on May 17, 2017 lost her battle to liver and colon cancer.…

Honk! Honk! "Move out the way," the man shouted as he came by us. Most people that ride the interstate are in danger. Because when eight lanes of traffic is moving at 80 mph, and you get stuck in the middle you could make the wrong move and end up road kill. That is why I prefer Route 66, (also known as the laid back road). It also has great scenery and graphics.…

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the word monster is defined as an imaginary creature that is typically large, ugly, and frightening. But is that what our modern day society really believes a monster is? Through time what people expect to see in a monster has changed. When you think of how people originally thought of aliens and vampires, you realize it’s a lot different than what we think of them today. Originally vampires were thought of being a corpse that would leave its grave at night and feed off the living by biting their necks. They weren’t able to be exposed to the sunlight or be in the sight of garlic. The idea of vampires have been around for millions of years and they have always represented something very horrifying.…

He said that his version of a true apocalypse would be a reoccurrence of the comet that ended the dinosaurs, or "human activities" that make the world's atmosphere too unsustainable for humans to survive. However, unlike Alejandra Guillen, Jonathan's fears on death do not influence his views on the apocalypse. His fears on death mainly concerns life after death, whether there is something out there after one dies, or if there is simply nothing. For the last question, whether he believes that the apocalypse is already happening, he responded, " Yes, negative human activity is becoming so rampant that we are destroying ecosystems, killing many species of flora and fauna thus we are slowly destroying the earth[']s natural environmental flow. It has been scientif[i]cally proven that we have entered the sixth great ex[t]inction which humans are at the base of". The results of these short questions were surprising to show that average people with ideas that are not related to one another, have a similar understanding or view of an apocalyptical world which humans have caused either directly or indirectly. Alberto, Alejandra, and Jonathan fear death; people fear death, but not enough to show resolve into improving Earth's…

February 2013, asteroid 2012 DA14 is plummeting towards Earth. My science class at Crestwood Junior High was chatting about this amazing phenomenon. Most of the class is just counting down the minutes until the bell rings. But I had just started my journey through the unknown, that is still going on today. Wanting to learn all I can about spacecrafts, planets, asteroids, and the many other things around us. From some of the first spacecrafts, all the way to cool technologies that never came to be. Just like the Dyna-Soar spaceplane that was canceled just before building started. This space age style journey has been going on for more than three years. Over just three short space filled years, I have accumulated two telescopes,…

Not many things occur the first week of July, with the exception of Independence Day, but in 1947 fireworks were not the only thing that caught peoples’ attention. During that time many people said they saw an unidentified flying object, also known as UFO, crash on a ranch in Roswell, New Mexico. Now, most people thought that it was a UFO, but actually it could have been anything. What happened that night in Roswell was known to be a mystery and some thought that the government was covering up knowledge of extraterrestrials. Was there really a mystery that needed to be solved?…

Lets face it. We as humans waste countless hours of our lives worrying about the future. Whether it’s asteroids or Y2K, it’s always something. It is said that in the future, with global warming, temperatures outdoors will be too hot to survive in. But what is the future? Is the future tomorrow, maybe next month, or next century? The fact is by the time all of the problems that we worry about surface, we will have been dead for hundreds of years. We’ll be safe somewhere in the afterlife with our children and their children. We don’t have to worry about things like polar ice caps melting and flooding the entire earth because, frankly, it isn’t going to effect us. We can go on in comfort knowing that tomorrow the sun will rise and with it, bring another four hours of gridlock traffic, eight hours confined to a cubical, 30 minutes idling your car in line at taco bell, and finally…
