Assistive Technology Case Study

As an Assistive Technology Specialist who operates a private rehabilitation consulting company, I have several services that I need to provide to my clients. In my company, “AccessTech Inc.”, the assistive technology services I provide include, participation in IEP meetings, maintenance of assistive technology devices, evaluation and assessment for assistive technology, advising and consulting, referral for assistive technology services, expert witness in litigation, and assistive technology training. Since I am providing services at ABZ School in Hidalgo County, I am currently participating in the IEP meeting of a student named Tommy. The following questions correspond to Tommy’s case.
1. What is the full meaning of IEP and who can be members
Considering Tommy’s problems in Writing class, a good tool that could help him is a word prediction program. A word prediction program will help him predict words while writing and essay or report. This tool is good for kids who struggle with writing and will improve their spelling, grammar, and word choices. Keyboards and touchscreens, speech-to-text, spelling and grammar check are also good AT tools for Writing. A text-to-speech device, audiobooks, optical character recognition, graphic organizers, picture dictionaries will improve Tommy’s performance in his Reading class. For the Math class, calculators, graphing tools, drawing tools, equation solving tools, and dictation devices can help Tommy improve his skills in division and multiplication. I listed several tools for each academic area in which Tommy has problems with. However, I strongly recommend the school to provide Tommy with a Text-to-speech device because this device will help Tommy in all academic areas. I also recommend a calculator for Tommy’s math class because he has problems in division and multiplication. In addition, a keyboard and touchscreen can also be used in all academic areas and is a fun tool for students with learning
