Assignment 8.1
Step 1: Solve the following problems.
Use a program (such as MS Word) to write your solutions to the following problems. Use the appropriate t-test to test for significant mean differences in the following research scenarios. Report all relevant information, including hypotheses, degrees of freedom, critical value, and a statement about significance.
1. Dr. Smith conducted an experiment to study the effects of massed versus distributed practice on memory. Twelve participants were randomly assigned to study a short chapter of a history text during either a single 3-hour session or 3 one-hour sessions separated by 24 hours. Twenty-four hours after the study session(s) ended, the participants took an examination on the information in the chapter and the number of correct answers was recorded. Data from that experiment are shown below.

S1 = 8.50 S2 = 7.23
X1 = 58.83 | X2 = 74.67 |
S1 = 8.50 | S2 = 7.23 |
Step 1: H0: x̄1=x̄2 H1: x̄1≠x̄2
Step 2: df= 6+6-2= 10
Step 3: find critical value for t at the .05 level of significance. t crit = 2.228
Step 4: calculate t =4.6
Step 5: compare t to tcrit: Is 4.6 ≥ 2.228? YES! Therefore, we reject the null hypothesis.

2. A researcher wants to see if antihistamines will increase the amount of time in seconds it takes participants to react to a surprise stimulus. He first collects the participants' reaction times while not on antihistamines, and then gives them the dose of antihistamine. One hour later, he collects the participants' reaction times again.

    When you perform a test of hypothesis, you must always use the 4-step approach: i. S1:the “Null” and “Alternate” hypotheses, ii. S2: calculate value of the test statistic, iii. S3: the level of significance and the critical value of the statistic, iv. S4: your decision rule and the conclusion reached in not rejecting or rejecting the null hypothesis. When asked to calculate p–value, S5, relate the p-value to the level of significance in reaching your conclusion.…

    Centralization sums up my primary reason for implementing Active Directory. The Active Directory structure makes it possible for you to achieve truly centralized management of users, regardless of how big your client’s network has become. If you've worked with Windows NT before, you know that in Windows NT a domain is a completely independent entity. While it's possible to create a trust relationship between domains that exist on a common network, the domains are never truly integrated with each other because there is no higher authority that manages the domains.…

    14. Evolutionary theories often emphasize that humans have adapted to their physical environment. One such theory hypothesizes that people should spontaneously follow a 24-hour cycle of sleeping and waking—even if they are not exposed to the usual pattern of sunlight. To test this notion, eight paid volunteers were placed (individually) in a room in which there was no light from the outside and no clocks or other indications of time. They could turn the lights on and off as they wished. After a month in the room, each individual tended to develop a steady cycle. Their cycles at the end of the study were as follows: 25, 27, 25, 23,24, 25, 26, and 25.…

    5. Consider t = −2.50 and t = −2.54. Which t ratio has the smaller p value? Provide a rationale for your answer. What does this result mean? Answer- The t ratio of -2.54 has a smaller p value (0.007) than the t ratio of -2.50 which has a p value of (0.01). The smaller the p values the less likely the findings will be in error. This result means that the men and women were different for physical role. The men (12.6 mean) scored higher on the physical role than the women (4.7 mean).…
