Arthropod Research Paper
The Arthropod Story

In the entire Animalia Kingdom 83% are Arthropods.

Some examples of arthropods are: Spiders, scorpions, crustaceans, and centipedes.

We should study Arthropods because there are so many of them that if something happened to remove them from Earth life would not be possible.

The crustacean Gammarus wilkitzkii lives on the underside of the Artic pack ice, and feeds on other crustaceans.

Crabs live up to a mile below the ocean surface in the harsh environment around hydrothermal vents they live in total darkness and can withstand the intense pressure, severe temperatures, and caustic chemicals that are the characteristics of these vents.

Jumping spiders live in the highest altitude almost seven kilometers above sea level.

Cleaner shrimp clean old scales and parasites off fish.

Cymotha exigua is a parasitic crustacean that lives in a fishes mouth attached to the fishes tongue and it feasts on the fishes blood.

leafcutter ants colonies live on communal fungal farms where workers tend to subterranean fungal gardens.

Australian trapdoor spiders construct elaborate snares for unsuspecting insects.

A locust swarm will consume almost anything green (including fabric and plastic!) and can strip a field bare in minutes.

Arthropods have around for more than 500 million years and are still evolving.

The five braches of the arthropod family tree are the Myriapods, Trilobites, chelicerae, Crustaceans, and Insects.

The five main characteristics of all arthropods is that they are bilateral, they have segmented bodies, they have a hard exoskeleton, they have jointed legs, they have many pairs of limbs.

The two types of symmetry are: bilateral symmetry and radial symmetry.

Jellyfish and coral polyps have radial

    Salinity In The Daphnia

The Daphniidae daphnia is a freshwater crustacean from the branchiopod class that is common to most ponds, lakes, pools, streams and springs around the world. The water flea, as it is sometimes referred to, is very small in size growing to a length of less than ¼ inch, it has a flat back, a rounded belly, black round eyes and a pair of antennae (Kindersley, 2006). The Daphnia have leaf-like appendages used in respiration, filter feeding and locomotion (Miller, 2010). Unfortunately, due to the size of these crustaceans they are often easy prey for bigger organisms in their ecosystem. Daphnia are often found in the bottom layers of the water column during the day and the upper layer at night to avoid visually feeding fish (Dawidowicz, 1992).…

The crab is a member of the Crustacea phylum and is in the family Grapsidae. This crab species is found only in New Zealand on rocky shores. The rocky shore, where the crabs studied in this investigation were found is quite exposed. There is a large rock platform that provides small crevices and small rocks which help to protect them from wave action and predators. There are also sea lettuce, and other algae growing on parts of the rocks.…

    Crustacean: An Overview

    • 649 Words
    • 3 Pages

Most crustaceans are free-living aquatic animals, but some are terrestrial (e.g. woodlice), some are parasitic (e.g. Rhizocephala, fish lice, tongue worms) and some are sessile (e.g. barnacles). The group has an extensive fossil record, reaching back to the Cambrian, and includes living fossils such as Triops cancriformis, which has existed apparently unchanged since the Triassic period. More than 10 million tons of crustaceans are produced by fishery or farming for human consumption, the majority of it being shrimp and prawns. Krill and copepods are not as widely fished, but may be the animals with the greatest biomass on the planet, and form a vital part of the food chain. The scientific study of crustaceans is known as carcinology (alternatively, malacostracology, crustaceology or crustalogy), and a scientist who works in carcinology is a carcinologist. The body of a crustacean is composed of body segments, which are grouped into three regions: the cephalon or head,[1] the thorax,[2] and the pleon or abdomen.[3] The head and thorax may be fused together to form a cephalothorax,[4] which may be covered by a single large carapace.[5] The crustacean body is protected by the hard exoskeleton, which must be moulted for the animal to grow. The shell around each somite can be divided into a dorsal tergum, ventral sternum and a…

As eusocial insects, termites live in colonies that, at maturity, number from several hundred to several million individuals. Colonies use decentralised, self-organised systems of activity guided by swarm intelligence which exploit food sources and environments unavailable to any single insect acting alone. A typical colony contains nymphs, workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals of both sexes, sometimes containing several egg-laying queens.…
