* Introduction
1. While arthritis has been plaguing man since the dawn of time, there are many things about the disease of which most people are unaware. From how it got its name to the economic toll it takes on our country. Arthritis is far from a new disease. In fact, many researchers believe it has been a part of civilization since the beginning of time, even affecting dinosaurs millions of years ago. Researchers also believe that skeletal remains from humans living around 4500 B.C. show signs of the disease. 2. Arthritis can be a very serious and extremely debilitating disease. While it is often thought of as only a disease that can effect seniors, arthritis can actually be found in people of any age. Arthritis is more common among women (24.9%) than men (18.1%), and girls are twice as likely to develop arthritis as boys. Nearly 300,000 children in the United States are living with juvenile arthritis. Juvenile arthritis (JA) refers to any form of arthritis or an arthritis-related condition that develops in children or teenagers who are less than 18 years of age. What is Arthritis?

The word "arthritis" means joint inflammation — from the Greek roots, "arth" meaning joint, and "itis" meaning inflammation. Most types of arthritis are characterized by joint pain — a stiff knee, painful hip, reddened and swollen fingers, but the causes are not always the same. The wear and tear of aging or heavy activity, autoimmune disorders or a breakdown in the body's ability to eliminate metabolic wastes can all lead to different forms of arthritis, each with its own method of treatment. About 40 million Americans suffer from the chronic symptoms of arthritis making it the leading cause of disability in the United States. There are over 100 different forms of arthritis. The most common form, osteoarthritis is a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age. The major complaint by individuals who have arthritis is joint pain. Pain is often a constant and may be localized to the joint affected. The pain from arthritis is due to inflammation that occurs around the joint, damage to the joint from disease, daily wear and tear of joint, muscle strains caused by forceful movements against stiff painful joints and fatigue. To mark the awareness about arthritis, 12th October is celebrated as “World ARTHRITIS day”. The month May is an ARTHRITS awareness month. Moving is the Best Medicine is the message for the 2010 Arthritis Awareness Month. Why did we choose this topic?

Our eleventh Std Science and technology textbook has a Chapter based on Human Skeleton and Locomotion. (Chapter 14) We chose ‘Arthritis’ as our topic because, it is a disease that not only affects an adult, but also a young children and especially the teens. In this twenty first century as our food habits, lifestyles have changed we are prone to this particular disease. Our aim is to make our colleagues aware about the various risks that can later in our future cause a disease. Symptoms of ARTHRITIS.
