The study of literature "is the place—there is no other in most schools—the place wherein the chief matters of concern are particulars of humanness—individual human feeling, human response, and human time, as these can be known through the written expression (at many literary levels) of men living and dead, and as they can be discovered by student writers seeking through words to name and compose and grasp their own experience. English [that is, literature] in sum is about my distinctness and the distinctness of other human beings. Its function, like that of some books called 'great,' is to strive at once to know the world through art, to know what if anything he uniquely is, and what some brothers uniquely are. The instruments employed are the imagination, the intellect, and texts or events that rouse the former to life . . . . [T]he goal . . . is to expand the areas of the human world—areas that would not exist but for art—with which individual man can feel solidarity and coextensiveness." My first reason we should study great work of literature is to explore other cultures and beliefs. Most books in the work talk about the culture” how they live” “what’s it like”. When we read we explore worlds in our head like their beliefs. We didn’t know that much about it until you start to read about it. You can also experience the culture when you’re reading literature.…

With the power invested upon it, literature reflects norms and values, revealing the ethos of one’s culture, the pains and pangs of history, the bloodshed preserved in books, the processes of political and class struggles, social facts, the beauty of the people but more than that, the beauty of their stories. As it mirrors human actions, it often presents a picture of what people think, say and do in the society or what society as a whole does in shaping the values of its people. Hence, the writer of a particular piece of literature is experiencing the culture, living in it, breathing with it. In this light, any student of a literature class is considered lucky to have tasted a slice of life from varied places without having to spend a plane ticket – a journey inscribed in pages. And right now, another passport is safely tucked in my palm. This line taken from the advertisement of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez’s Magic Sing would be the best starting point of this paper, “Tara na, byahe tayo ng ating makita ang ganda ng Pilipinas.” This is a content analysis of the novel, Viajero by F. Sionil Jose.…
