Around the World in Eighty Days -BOOK REVIEW
AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS
AUTHOR – JULES VERNE
PUBLISHIND HOUSE – PENGUIN CLASSICS
COST – Rs 175 Around the world in eighty days is one of the most celebrated fiction novel authored by Jules Verne. It revolves around Phileas Fogg, a rich gentleman, who lives a quarantine life with habits carried out to mathematical precision. Very little is known about Mr. Fogg's social life other than that he spends most of the day playing whist with a few others in the Reform Club. In short, he is the least communicative of men and follows a strict regime. However, while having a conversation with his fellow partners at whist, Mr. Fogg makes a decision to prove to them that it is possible to travel around the world in eighty days and bets £20,000 on his success and immediately departs for the journey with his newly appointed servant, Passepartout. During their journey they encounter many obstacles and adventures, they rescue an Indian princess from getting sacrificed, Mr. Fogg is mistaken for a bank robber and most disastrously, the train that they travel on is attacked and overcome by Sioux warriors... With his fortune and reputation at stake, Phileas Fogg has everything to lose if he fails. To find out if they ever reached London again, you will have to read the book! This oeuvre by Jules Verne had so many hair-raising and pulse-speeding adventures that the urge to find out what happens next was unbearable for me! In addition to that the way Verne has portrayed Mr. Fogg’s habits is very amusing and gives a beautiful touch to the book. And most importantly the way of writing is admirable, Verne has described the situations so well that you feel as a part of them. Also, as a student, the vocabulary used in the book has helped me improve my English as well. This is why I love this book so much!

Novels written with an abundance of detail tend to create a master literary works. Novels of such detail create space for questions and broad thinking, but does not leave the reader confused. In both Chronicle of death Foretold and Perfume, the authors included detail for a more imaginative understanding of the novel.…

I start reading this book with bad mood. I hate to read books, especially the book not written by English. It will always be a disaster for someone to read the book that not written by their first language. However, this book really blows my mind. Bod Focazio and his special style of humorous told me this is a knowledgeable and fun book. This book gives me a lot of things that will be used in the future; this book really is a guide to me. One day, if I could be a successful person, this book really played an important role for that. A great gift to his dad and his dad must be very proud of him.…

This book is a very interesting read, if you have some self discipline. I mean that you need some self discipline because this book didn't really captivate me in the sense that I couldn't put it down. But after reading it for a while, I started to appreciate the author's way of describing the characters and actions in this book.…

In addition to that, I hope my glog was able to give the readers a vision of the characters and the setting so that they can really visualize this story while they are reading it. My glog uses quotes and is able to represent the theme of fate in a way that is easy to understand. Although my glog was able to show all of these things, I believe that I should have gone more into depth and made it less monotoned.…

The book begins in writing, describing to the reader what is about to be witnessed, followed by an array of illustrations “that zoom in from the moon to the tunnels within the Paris metro train station. Hugo Cabret moves amongst the commuters until, unseen, he slips into the tunnels behind the walls and makes his way to his 'home '. Through a peephole Hugo watches an old man selling toys and the text begins” (Maples Magazine, 2007, para 1). Immediately this captures the audience, as it evokes curiosity and allows the reader to form their own perspective, using their own words and imagination.…

“The right good book is always a book of travel; it is about a life’s journey”. This quote by H.M. Tomlinson means that the people in the book grow throughout the story and can take people to different places by making them think of new ideas that go against their true thinking. I agree with the quote and interpretation. Two works of literature that help support the quote are To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and “1984” by George Orwell. Literary elements that prove the quote true are characterization, and person versus society.…

”Just like that. From a hundred miles an hour to asleep in a nanosecond. I wanted so badly to lie down next to her on the couch, to wrap my arms around her and sleep. Not fuck, like in those movies. Not even have sex. Just sleep together, in the most innocent sense of the phrase. But I lacked the courage and she had a boyfriend and I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane.”…

What I enjoyed most about reading this book was the way the author introduced and described all of the characters. I had a great picture in my mind about each and every character and I felt myself thinking about some of them even when they were absent from a page or two. It became so interesting that before I could finish the book, I had to turn to the internet to look up the characters of the movie. I just had to see them in the flesh!…
