Arguments Against Mandatory Labeling
The labeling fad of the 21st century came along with the health craze. Labels such as Organic, Gluten Free, and Local have been turned into marketing ploys. And genetically modified organisms have gotten their fair share of critics. Ranging from people raving about how they’re “saving third world countries” to how they’re “killing our world”. Mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is something that many are pushing for the government to make mandatory. However they have been proven to pose no serious risks to human health or the environment. Consequently the cost of the labels is more than the benefit that they would provide, so is it really necessary. The journal article On Mandatory labeling with special reference to genetically modified organisms by Cass R. Sunstein further explains this after legislation was passed in an attempt to make labeling GMOs mandatory. Throughout the article you can see Sunstein's bias towards not labeling. The main points in his article are reasons why it shouldn’t be mandatory to label GMOs. One of the key reasons that so many want it to be required is because they want to know what is in their food, which is well within their right. However Sunstein mentions something that many government officials are worried about; that requiring GMOs to be labeled would cause …show more content…
As of 2016 GMOs are required to be labeled. More and more of our foods are starting to include these organisms, and according to this article and the research it used we are not at any health risks nor is our environment. Sunstein’s article helped us to better understand the business point of view regarding GMOs and showed why some, himself included, do not feel that the labeling is necessary. Genetically modified organisms still cause the public to have many questions, but for now we know what they are

GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, have been a minor but relevant issue since they became popular. They exist almost everywhere in America, but countless people continue to debate whether they should remain. Andrew Pollack’s article “Genetically Engineered Crops Are Safe, Analysis Finds,” for instance, leans toward GMOs. In contrast, Danny Hakim’s “Doubts About the Promised Bounty of Genetically Modified Crops” gravitates against them. While exploring their perspectives of GMOs, the articles most prominently include an obvious audience, strong but contrasting uses of information, and various rhetorical appeals, all of which help demonstrate their purpose.…

“All we want is a simple label for the food that's on our table”. This quote was spoken from a marcher who demands gmos to be labeled for our safety. Gmos are man made plants that still possess unknown effects to our health. In a recent article entitled “labels for gmos foods are a bad idea ” directly oppose people questioning gmos and believing gmos are hazardous. The article tries to persuade the reader into giving a second thought on gmos and think maybe their not so dangerous. Ultimately the articles opinion on gmos being in the food market is that gmos are safe for eating and now ones reported about gmos harming their health. I recognize this article as someone's opinion but i disagree with the idea. Also the article attacks directly…

In our society today, there is a small percent of our food that has been genetically engineered. Genetically modified food can affect people that ingest the substances by causing health issues. With these possible long-term effects of GM foods, the FDA, Food and Drug Administration, should require labels for consumers to see. These labels would help inform the public of the possible dangers of the GM food. Without these labels people can suffer serious medical conditions that can destroy their lifestyles. The FDA should require warning labels on all GM foods.…

One thing consumers demanding to be put on labels if they have used GMO content food. Before GMO food comes we did not have problem on conventional way of manipulating genes but the configuration done in the lab consumers asking to be labeled. In fact, it should be enough to satisfy public concerns, since GM Free products will be distinctly labeled as such and can be chosen by consumers in search of these items (Should Genetically Modified Foods Be Labeled Pros and Cons, 2014). Moreover, it will be cost effective, because the majority of U.S. products (60 to 70 percent) contain a genetically modified ingredient that would have to be labeled, costing the producers and customers additional money to label and purchase the items (Schiffman, 2012). However, voluntary labels to advertise GM Free products would affect a smaller number of producers, who could defray the label costs by charging buyers for the privilege of having available products that do not contain genetically modified…

A 2003 poll showed that 92 percent of Americans favor labeling genetically Engineered (GE) food. Why would this food need labeled? Because it was created by transporting a gene from one organism to another, therefore making it a new organism. This action is done in animals and plants alike. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are organisms whose genomes have been altered to favor certain characteristics (Diaz). For many years there has been breeding done in plants so as to have the desired characteristics, such as juicier tomatoes. The United States government does not see GMOs differently from breeding. GMOs, though, are formed by scientific procedures like cloning and Recombinant DNA technology. A primary reason…

    Ethics Of Gmos

On a personal level, I truly believe that GMOs are in overall beneficial for human consumption, not only for its increase of production at low costs, but because I found it tremendously helpful for the benefit of many nations to reduce the starvation of their people. There are many ethical issues when it comes to GMOs and with this the decision of the people in power to promote or block their production. GM products are daily consumed in the world without any scientific negative effects, but rather many positive effects on people’s life. However, I do see the necessity to label their products as “GMOs” inform the public of what they are eating, just like the nutrition facts labels are seen in any other products. The general perspective for…

This is because it is not required to have a label on food that clearly states that the food contains ingredients from a GMO. As a matter of fact, the food doesn’t have to have a label of any kind on it whatsoever. GM farms actually fight the conflict. They don’t want to label their food as GMO made. In the article “Genetically Modified Food,” by Jason McLure, he writes that, “GM farming giants and other referendum foes argue that the health and environmental concerns are unfounded, and that labeling effort is an attempt to demonize a technology with enormous potential benefits” (McLure 719). The reason that these concerns are unfounded is because they are easy to overlook. This is not an excuse because it still poses a threat to future consumers. Humans have a right to know that what they’re in their mouth may lead to health risks in the future. This can all be settled with a label on the food, but companies know that if they do this, sales will decrease because consumers will know that whatever has been put into the food has been genetically…

I think that there is legitimacy to the labeling of GMOs. GMOs have become a necessary evil for us to try and find innovative solutions to our growing demand for food production due to the continued increase of our global population. If you think about it we have been genetically modifying food and animals for centuries since the birth of modern agriculture and animal husbandry. We have cross breed crops and animals to accentuate their most desirable traits. The only difference is that we were doing so in a process that took a long time with the utilization of species that were able to breed with one another. Genetic modification is a whole new ballgame with creating a product that has the desirable traits, by introducing genes into an organism…

Better research will encourage to create more foods that are being modified, modification in foods people always eat that are not necessarily healthy but to add the extra nutritional value that is needed. Currently when a food has been genetically modified it doesn't have to be labeled as such. Consumers argue that the foods they purchase from supermarkets should be labeled if genetically modified because of the risks of Gm in foods. Consumers of GM foods may be subjected to the following risks infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. Allergic reactions in people happens when a harmless protein enters the body and sparks an immune response. Although no allergic reactions have been confirmed their is still studies that have shown it to be possible. If research is continued I believe labeling should be…

Since 1996 when genetically modified foods were introduced the rate of chronic illness almost doubled in just nine years (2015 galegroup.com). In just twelve years 383 million pounds of extra herbicides were sprayed onto crop. Since there is an extreme amount of herbicides being used the amount of toxins and residues has raised significantly. This poses a huge health threat considering some side effects include birth defects and cancer (2011 responsibletechnology.org). Currently it is impossible to tell if the food consumed by an individual is genetically modified due to the lack of regulation by the Food and Drug Administration not requiring any labels on these foods. The government needs to begin labeling these foods with stickers like they do with fruits and vegetables so people can protect themselves and future generations from these dangerous…

To find a broad array of information and sources I simply searched for “GMO food labeling”. As I expected a large number of links appeared. The one that most intrigued me was one by the New York Times, “U.S. Senate to Vote on GMO Food Labeling Bill”, co-written by Jennifer Steinhauer and Stefanie Strom. As I read the article, it became apparent that this had developed into quite the political controversy. A modern day republican versus democrat debate. The democrats, against the idea of food labeling, were worried that the labeling would cause food prices to rise dramatically. On the other hand, republicans claimed that they “had gone out of their way to give concessions to pro-labeling factions” (Steinhauer and Strom). From just one article, I was on the fence. My morals were clashing with my inner economist. Both ideas appeared to have potential flaws, yet the topic of genetically modified foods is so controversial and important, especially in today’s advanced…
