Arguments Against Interscholastic Sports
1. According to the twelfth edition of Sports in Society by Jay Coakley, “"Generalizing about high school and college sport programs is difficult because programs and the conditions under which participation occurs are so diverse” (Coakley, 476). However, there are definitely some broad, widespread issues that are found within the majority of high school sports programs. The textbook offers a plethora of claims against interscholastic sports, and one that stood out to was the claim that highlighted the pressure that interscholastic sports place on student-athletes. Unlike club sports, high school sports practice for over 2 hours every day after school and have games on weeknights, leaving little time to prepare for exams and to get homework done. This causes an unnecessary amount of stress and places an extreme pressure on athletes to continue to excel in both schoolwork and then also excel at their sport. I was a varsity student athlete, and I definitely support this claim about interscholastic sport causing pressure on athletes. I played softball for my high school, and there were some weeks in the springtime when I had games every day of the week and a double-header on Saturday. Weeks like these put a TON of pressure on me to perform well during my games but also to keep up with my …show more content…
A good way to alleviate some of the pressure would to make a slightly less intense schedule, where games would only be played 4 times a week or so, and when the team did not have games, possibly giving the players a day off of practice in order for their bodies to recuperate and to catch-up with school

Richard L. Worsnop offers multiple different points about high school sports and athletes. Concerns about the oppression of young athletes and debating if high school athletics “builds character”, are some of the main issues pointed out. Some coaches believe interscholastic sports competitions teach everything about character and teamwork, while others believe overemphasizing a win can teach the growth of negative character traits. Meanwhile, there are no doubts that certain drugs can enhance an athlete’s performance, but this can lead to injury and other harmful effects. High school athletes are sometimes considered, “dumb jocks”, which leads to the question if student athletes should maintain a certain grade-point average. Some players think…

“People spend long hours practicing, and that commitment extends to the rest of the school, which means that students are practicing for the game instead of doing their school work” (Ripley 10). When one school banned sports for good, they had a 30% increase in the school’s average grade level. Student’s grades are suffering from sports, schools should no longer have after school athletics. It is clear that all after school sports should no longer be so that all students can learn with their full attention on school…

Once kids have been through a year or two in sports, they start to forget the pressure and remember the fun. There may be those times when you are at your basketball game, the score is tied and now you have to take the free throw to win the game. Some kids may feel the pressure, a lot. Others may just shoot like it’s nothing. That is because they are used to the pressure. When you are on a competitive sports team, you get used to pressure. Then once you are used to the pressure, then you can start to have more fun.…

The debate for competitive sports have been going on for awhile now. Here are some negative effects. Goal/Decision making it is crucial in Competitive sports to have goals and make the right choice for the team. Nearly 65% of children say they participate in sports to be with their friends (Statistic Brain). Sports were established so that the individual could not only exercise, but also to compete against a rival. Just as there are individual sports, there are team sports in high school. The idea of a team sport is that every single person on the field or court must work in unison to have the greatest opportunity to win. In addition to the increasing popularity of sports, the average child’s age when they join a team is decreasing. For example, the age that a child joins a basketball team has shifted from fourth grade to first grade or even kindergarten in the past decade. School is the primary factor when you review the participation in athletics,…

Well school is more complicate d for student athletes, because we have to balance more in the sense that we have class, practice, games, and some games require you to travel. In some situations we have to rush to get our work turned in because some teachers feel that being a student athlete does not mean anything and you are viewed as a regular student. Student athletes do not want special treatment so that sports can be used as an excuse, but we would like to have an understanding with our teachers during times that we have to travel and we will be missing class and possibly assignments. When you have to rush to get work in before road trips, most of the time the work turned in is of poor quality, which means you will get a bad grade. That helps nothing because in order to play sports you have to maintain a certain grade point average but if we are turning in poor quality work then our grades could possibly be unacceptable. Then if you are on scholarship and your grades are unacceptable you will then lose your scholarship which can bring about more…

One reason high school sports aren’t beneficial is because they create a lot of pressure. According to the video “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” by KCRA, sports are sometimes the only way students can get into a good college and be able afford it. This puts a lot of pressure on the athletes to perform at their best 100% of the time. Experts say that your child's entire team will suffer if the parents are pressuring their kids (KCRA.com, “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” ). This fact is important because it proves, when parents put pressure on their children it does not benefit them, in fact it is actually setting them up for life in an unhealthy way. This shows that the pressure from sports is not good and not worth it.…

Do you think that high school should ban sports? Well do you? I didn’t think so either. Some people say that we should ban sports from our school. I wouldn’t want to ban sports from high school at all. I wouldn’t because if we did then some students wouldn’t be able to find something that would make them want to come to school or get good grades. I’d say that sports make kids want to come to school and excel at it. I believe that kids that participate in school sports have better leadership skills and self-confidence.…

High School sports have always been questioned because of all the health risks that they bring to those who participate in them. As of now High School sports are still a major part of High School and large amount of students do them. However, many claim the pros outweigh the cons, meaning that people shouldn’t be so concerned about what “could” happen. Not only do sports keep the students healthy and active, they bring a social aspect that can’t be found anywhere else, and the odds of being injured aren’t high and can happen to anyone.…
