Argumentative Essay: Should Music Be Censored?
Music is a powerful form of speech and expression. At its most basic level it is meant to entertain, but in some instances, it is so powerful to cause both cultural and political revolutions. My question is, should such an influential expression be censored? I believe despite the power of music, it should not be censored. I believe music carries important messages about life both good and bad that need to be heard. By censoring music, we shut out the ability for people to process and decide on their own those important messages. Furthermore, censorship in any form is a violation of the first amendment. Also I believe the approach should be not censorship, but literacy. Finally, censorship is a matter of opinion and everyone’s opinion is different. …show more content…
It is not censorship, but literacy. The children and teens of this nation need to be able to understand the rights and wrongs of life. Music is a way to teach them these rights and wrongs. If you censor music, you aren’t teaching them anything. You are blinding them to reality. Life isn’t always lollipops and rainbows. Life is full of hard work, disappointment, and it isn’t always fair. We need to teach people the difference between imagination and reality. Music opens our eyes to what we need to see. If you take that away, no one is going to learn anything and we will all live in shadow. The final reason why I believe music should not be censored is, censorship is a matter of opinion and everyone’s opinions are different. The question is, who gets to decide what needs to be censored? My idea of what needs to be censored could be totally different from another person’s. Censoring based on opinion is like a dictatorship of only a few. Our country is not a dictatorship. We are a country of democracy of the people meaning all of us count. It’s all up to interpretation. The way you interpret things isn’t always what it actually

Although I don’t agree with most forms of censorship, I feel as if it is important in certain situations. For instance, television must be censored because all age groups watch it, and it influences younger children’s behavior because they have seen it on television. Not to mention anyone at any time can watch TV. Whereas censoring books is completely different. The reader has the option to read the book, making the author not reliable. Not just any age group can pick up a book and begin to read the content. But a six-month-old baby can sit in front of a television and be influenced by the action of a criminal. Certain things influence certain age groups and I feel as if books shouldn’t be responsible. You have to actually read a book; you cannot just sit and watch the pages. I feel as if censorship should appeal to only things that require it, and in my opinion, books do not require censorship.…

I believe censorship is acceptable because it’s very much needed in today’s society. Not all movies or music are meant for a younger age group. There are specific genres and ratings for children because most adults believe they should be “shielded” from the topics discussed or depicted. The NC-17 rating is perfect for those people who enjoy seeing brains ripped out of a person’s head. Also censorship is acceptable because there is larger variety of movies for parents to see while their child watches a PG…

In society music is an extremely important form of art. It is one of the most sincere forms of expression. Music can influence people from many different backgrounds and cultures. Musicians have the same freedom of speech rights as any other United States citizen. In the mid 1980's rock musicians' rights were challenged with issues including censorship and first amendment guarantees.…

Over the past few years, Omaha native Nate Maloley (a.k.a. Skate) has become a force to be reckoned with. With a huge following on social media, Skate is one of the most prominent up-and-coming rappers/hip-hop artists in the music industry. Recently, at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards, he received a nomination for "Choice Music: Next Big Thing," and earlier this week, he released his first full-length album titled Maloski. Without a doubt, I have to admit that I am quite impressed.…

To add up, due of the amendment made by our founding fathers, I do not believe there will ever be an answer to the question whether or not music should be censored. The way I see, it should not be censored. Unfortunately, many children often hear explicit language from older siblings or parents at an early age. They believe that since someone…

The First Amendment to the Bill of Rights exists because the Founders of our country understood the importance of free expression. The First Amendment states "Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press . . ." (Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution 17). One of the ways the American people use this freedom of speech and expression is through the creation of the art form known as music. Music's verbal expression bonds our society through our emotions and experiences. This fundamental right of freedom of expression is being threatened by public and governmental groups who believe they have authority to monitor and decide what others should experience. The censorship of music lyrics is a violation of our First Amendment right, and public groups should not be allowed to bypass this right to censor obscene lyrics produced in the music industry.…

No, that's not true," says Wendy Wright of an organization, Concerned Women for America, on the enemy list of virtually all other anti-censorship supporters. "Censorship means that the government restrains speech. We are in favor of those in the music industry using common sense: In essence, that they don't promote behavior or activities that they wouldn't want committed against their wife or children." CWFA sees music the music in question as having potential to cultivate certain ideas in the minds of the youth."The argument that it does not affect kids, that it does not promote similar behavior, is ridiculous. If that were true, they would not advertise or rely on marketing – both fields depend on the fact that humans can be enticed into doing something that they wouldn't have thought up on their…

Boris Opening Statement- Censorship in music is a topic that has brought about much controversy in the past two decades. There have been many different arguments on the topic, however the question still remains as if it should be censored or it should not be censored. Before you can form an opinion on this, you must hear both sides of the argument on this much-debated topic. Some people believe that music should be censored so all audiences can hear it without it containing any controversial lyrics. Others believe it should not be censored and musical artists should be able to speak, sing, rap, or rhyme freely without anyone censoring them. Preventing speech is a clear violation of the First Amendment. When you really think about it, it is a violation of the First Amendment, which says: "Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech or of the press". The First Amendment guarantees the right to freedom of speech, and censorship is violating peoples' rights to say whatever they…

Our culture should not have censored material. I think that if you have censored material it is hiding away part of the real world. Keeping controversial and upsetting material away from the public eye promotes ignorance and stupidity, but I feel that sometimes there should be limitations for the comfort of others. Overall, people should become more open minded and except the fact that they are going to see or hear things they do not want to. I think if you do not like something, then do not do anything that has to do with it. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury he shows that censoring material causes people to become lazy and not think.…

Censorship protects our children from seeing what could possibly damage them mentally and keeps things that should not be seen in public to stay in the shadows. Many people hate censorship because they think it takes away their freedom of speech. It doesn’t because as long as the people don’t say things that should be said they won’t be censored. Censorship stops things from being seen that shouldn’t be. Censorship is a necessity for the new…

The U.S. Constitution says that everyone that is an American citizen has the right of free speech. You can find censorship almost anywhere around you. It’s in music, television, and even literature. I don’t believe that it is fair that there be some much censorship in a country that does nothing but promise freedom to all its occupants. It is said that suppression of all of these things helps to prevent the crimes that occur. However even with all of the restrictions, there are still people murdering and stealing. America was founded on freedom. Why should the government censor the motion picture industry, the…

According to the First Amendment, artists should be protected by the freedom of speech which by law should protect the artist from any censorship. For example, if a rapper uses vulgar language in one of their songs and raps about fighting or killing their enemy, it doesn’t necessarily mean that whoever is listening will go out and commit a murder. If you’re an adult, you can’t blame a song or an artist for your actions. Whatever an artist says in their music isn’t mean’t to be taken verbatim, in most situations the lyrics are just for entertainment, nothing more. Most people that support the censorship of music are only supporting it for personal reasons. Most people are willing to give up their freedom of speech just because they don’t agree with 21 Savage’s views on religion and how he lived his life or how Lil Wayne chooses to be in a gang or smokes weed.…

Music carries many trends from generation to generation, but one of the oldest forms of censorship is what can and can’t be read on paper. Banned books are usually illegal because of certain information that could be a threat to someone or security. Censorship in today’s society can get out of hand real quick on both ends of the issue. It seems like there is always someone who is personally offended by something and tries to take whatever offended them away from everyone else. Then again, if there was no censorship, perhaps collective morals would cease to exist in society. What is not obscene to one person could very well be to another and that is one main reason why censorship does exist. However, that something is obscene to one person shouldn’t forbid another from seeing or hearing that form of expression if they want. Censorship helps gives the right to parents to raise their children in an environment in which parents feel comfortable and it helps parents decide what materials their children can be exposed to and what should be withheld. “We are living in a time when flowers are trying to live on flowers, instead of growing on good rain and black loam,” said Faber. What Faber is talking about is that censorship can also…
