The transition itself to self driving cars could be costly and dangerous. Self driving cars would be very expensive, so not every person could afford to own one. The danger of the switch is that self driving cars have to take into account the cars that are still operated by people: “‘autonomous drive vehicles are a wonderful idea, but the transition from driver-operated to driverless is likely to be filled with accidents.’ For instance, while approaching a traffic light, a self-driving car calculates that if it speeds up a little bit, it will be able to pass through the light, but the driver in the car in front decides to stop because he thinks he won’t make it on time. What do you think the result will be?” (Ramirez). The most controversial part of self driving cars however, is how the computer inside the car will decide whose life is more important in the case of an inevitable accident. “the cars will be designed to avoid accidents, but ‘If it happens where there is a situation where a car couldn’t escape, it’ll go for the smaller thing.’ But what if the smaller thing is a child?” (Spangler). It is very difficult to determine whose life is more important, and even more difficult to program a car to…

To better understand the situation we should realize that to make the driverless cars work properly there has to be a lot of money put into them. In the article “PRO/CON: Cars that drive themselves could soon become the norm” by Newsela staff it explains that “Developing a nationwide self-driving car system would require countless amounts of effort and money.” This information illustrates that self-driving cars aren’t good because they are using a lot of money in making these cars, when they can be using the money for more important…

“Google has a fleet of driverless cars since 2009, and they’ve been driven over a half of a million miles without a crash” according to Jamie Page Deaton and Kristen Hall-Geisler in the article ‘Cars of tomorrow-still not fling.’ Humans get into an accident every a half a million miles, this shows that driverless cars are a safer alternative. These cars had a 3D model brain that is accurate to the centimeter because 64 laser beams take about one million measurements per second. They also contain a radar, camera, and GPS.…

The subject is being researched and developed calling them autonomous vehicles exclaiming the need to ensure the passengers are safe when driving by removing the human error of being distracted. Yet, the major issues preventing it will not be easy to overcome. Unless all cars would be autonomous no amount of sensors, cameras. or computer programming will be able to cope with other driver’s instincts and actions. Concerning cost more technology will come at a larger cost, of which many will be unable to afford. (The self-driving function is stated by) Even still, an autonomous car can crash, or get cashed into just as any other would, only you'd be helplessly along for the ride. The reaction time or decisions made by a car in certain situations may not make sense. To serve as a point think of a natural disaster, flooding could prevent the car from going a certain path or leave it damaged and stuck. If the car is programmed to follow the road what will happen if its blocked, or what if a family wishes to drive through the uncharted woods? Another example is provided by Durbin as he said how “There are still some situations in which humans outperform computers. At a four-way stop, for example, a driver can crane his neck, scan for traffic in any direction and quickly determine the speed of any oncoming vehicles. So far,…

We see this technology evolving at a fast pace with fierce competition amongst many big-name companies. Many are researching and implementing the latest technology or submitting a patent for that design. Technology is great for society but with safety in mind that must be the main priority. Personal safety is one of the main uncertainties when it comes down to employing self-driving vehicles on our roadways. The potential for injuries that will be talked about are whiplash, concussions and other injuries from vehicle accidents. Once the safety measures are in place and functions as intended we will start to see companies using these vehicles to help with cost saving measures. Drivers will be replaced and jobs lost, though this will be a large issue amongst those effected there will be benefits which will be saving money and limiting accidents. We will likely see a great deal of resistance for mass quantities of self-driving vehicles but with deaths and injuries on the rise each year on our road ways we need solutions to help lower statistics. Self-Driving vehicles may be the answer to those problems. Driverless vehicles are designed to reduce the overall risk for traffic accidents by various sensors and features. Many vehicles already utilize some form of driver assistance on the roadways, technology will only build on this foundation that has been laid. With more and more states allowing autonomous vehicles driving on their roads don’t be surprised to see a driver less vehicle heading in your…

    Embrace Driverless Cars

Can we learn to embrace driverless cars or are we afraid to let go of our steering wheels? My opinion concludes this: millennials will embrace driverless cars versus older drivers who see cars as the road to freedom. Millennials embrace new technology, and are already used to tech taking over their lives, i.e. smart phones and social media, their present life line. However: older drivers, if smart will embrace this technology to chauffeur them when their motor skills and sight decline. There will be hurdles along the way to mass use of highly automated vehicle (HAV’s), local governments need to start preparing for the what is coming when these cars become more prevalent, most importantly, the loss of revenue from individual car ownership to…

Driverless cars is a bad idea because the car can go to fast on a cliff and can go off the edge. It can crash into other driverless cars while going at high speeds and the sensor doesn’t see the other driverless car and everyone will be using driverless cars and there’ll be too much of them to get anywhere.…

There are some negatives to autonomous car though, the two main ones being that you, as a driver, will not have total control of the car 100 percent of the time and that the car would be vulnerable to hackers as it is packed with all sorts of wireless communication like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and radio just to name a few. My opinion is that both those points are generally moot because both those risks are at play in most cars today. The hacking risk is totally possible today and has been done before, I have seen the video the article refers to and it is quite shocking that a couple of computer hackers can take control of a moving vehicle, potentially from the other side of the planet, and steer it straight into a ditch. I think that if anything hacking cars in the future will be harder than today because, with so much focus on wireless technology in the car, there is also going to be a lot of focus, time and energy spent on securities in those…

While convenience is a major reason in the development of a self-driving vehicle, the biggest reason is increased road safety. Holding the drivers of self-driving cars responsible for all accidents will increase the amount of awareness they give to the road, instead of being distracted or even not paying attention at all. If they fail to pay attention it is there fault for wrecking, because computers are not perfect, and require human intervention to avoid most accidents. Allowing self-driving cars to save their occupants instead of others is a horrible mistake that will only get worse with…
