Can you believe that some people think swimming isn’t a sport? Swimming has been around for centuries, but most people just do it for fun. Luckily people learn how to swim because it is a skill that is almost required in life and parents want them to be safe, but other people learn for different reasons. Some learn it because it is something you can do your entire life. Amazingly others do it because it is the sport they dream about and want to doing. When we are in school we practice in a twenty-five meter pool, but in the summer we practice in a fifty meter pool. When we go to swim team we like to practice as solid as we can, even though our coaches make it hard. Practicing sprint work and the strokes that we are not excellent at. Swimmers also require a fierce determination. A strong will, so when the going gets tough, the tough get going. You have to make a conscious effort to work on your stroke form, your turns, your touches. Every swimmer knows that the last stroke can make or break a race. You may think you tied the swimmer next to you, but in reality they touched a sixteenth of a second before you. In swimming, every second counts. My coach hammered into me that it wasn’t you against the swimmers in the other lanes, it was you against the clock, you against yourself. After about a year or so of swimming, I started ignoring everyone in the other lanes. From the second I heard the bell, to the moment I touched the wall, it was me against myself. It was me, pushing myself as hard, and as fast and far as I could go. To me, if when I finished the race, I could pull myself up out of the pool right after I finished, I didn’t race hard enough. But those times when I would race a 200 yard sprint, by the last 50 yards, I felt like I was pulling lead. But I would just think,…

It is harder than it sounds. When you first start dancing you break down the mussels and then build them back up to gain more muscle. I also laugh when athletes say that Dance is not a sport. I tell them to go to a dance class for a day and see if they…

Water resistance is about 800 times larger than air resistance, so swimming is like working out with small sandbags. A one-hour swim burns about 500 to 700 calories, which almost equals the calories burnt by walking 7 miles. Besides, when swimming, swimmers use every single muscle to go forward. The four main strokes of swimming (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly) all have obvious effects on weight loss.
