Argument Essay
Do you agree or disagree that America has its own "unique" food and celebrations. Use specific examples to support your opinion.

Throughout history, America has been a land of immigrants. American has been influenced by many cultures from all over the world. This is why America has no set language or culture. I disagree, because America has its own unique food and celebrations, but rather it obtained it from other countries.
Some examples of food is shown in Soul Food by Amiri Baraka “Deep fat frying, the Dutch found out in 17th century New Amsterdam, was an African specialty”(453). This shows us that one of the most traditional fast food restaurants in America originated from Africa. Another example would be barbeque ribs “also straight out of the South with the west Indians, i.e., Africans from farther south” (454). This also shows us that some traditional foods such as ribs were not invented by Americans, but rather from people of the south who originated from African and West Indians. This is going back to that the America is a land of immigrants and this influenced by the entire world.
St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween are two examples of celebrations that did not originated in America. “St Patrick is known as the patron saint of Ireland. True, he was not a born Irish. But he has become an integral part of the Irish heritage, mostly through his service across Ireland of the 5th century”. St. Patrick’s Day originated in Ireland and due to all the immigrants it has spread from Ireland to America. This holiday is celebrated every year and it’s celebrated by many Americans, even those who are not Irish. Halloween “originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts”. Today Halloween is celebrated mostly by kids who dress up in customs and go from door to door asking for candies. Although both holidays have been modified by Americans it does not change the fact that they did not

The culture of the United States is primarily Western, but is influenced by Native American, African, Asian, Polynesian, and Latin American cultures. A strand of what may be described as American culture started its formation over 10,000 years ago with the migration of Paleo-Indians from Asia, as well as from Oceania and Europe, into the region that is today the continental United States. The United States of America has its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts, social habits, cuisine, and folklore. The United States of America is an ethnically and racially diverse country as a result of large-scale migration from…

Marijuana, an herb with over two hundred common names including weed, pot, and bud, is a mixture of green and brown dried shredded leaves of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. Marijuana may be used for recreational and medical use as a psychoactive substance. It contains a chemical called THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). When marijuana smoke is inhaled, THC passes through the lungs, bloodstream, and other organs in the body, including the brain. Marijuana has many benefits that general Americans are unaware of, and with this in mind, marijuana should be legalized. There are several reasons for this. First marijuana should be legal due to its helpfulness in treating cancer patients and chronic diseases. Secondly, there is no reason why alcohol and cigarettes should be legal and marijuana should not be. Finally, marijuana does not cause physical addiction.…

I see where you're coming from, Anastasia. There are definitely some people who conform a majority percent of their way of living to American culture based on pure facts for survival. As a result of this conformity, they may lose that sense of where they originally came from. However, there are still a lot of people who still have close ties to their culture or just have developed a new distinctive culture, which is why I say where more of a salad bowl. Some people say we're a combination of both, though. So, American culture just may be what one of our fellow classmates said, a soup and salad deal.…

Only in Miami can you see a Cuban family-run restaurant serving Italian pizza while playing a style of music that originated in Africa. Every day we experience the foods, music, and traditions of many different cultures. Almost no family shares the same cultural blend as another. My family is no exception to this trend. My mom was born and raised in Florida however; her father has descendants from England. My paternal grandmother’s family came from France, but the war kept sending them back and forth between Spain and France. My grandmother is the only one of her siblings born in Spain. I also have German and Venezuelan roots. I think of it all as the ingredients in the dish Chicken Chop; the most prominent ingredients in this “Cultural Dish” are the English and Hispanic cultures. These are the elements, sprinkled with some cosmopolitan influential flare, that have influenced my personal culture over the years.…

Everyone who migrates from one country to another, always value their cultures. It may be the same world, but the cultures will always differ from each other. Mexico and the United States share the same border, but share two completely different customs. “No custom is good or bad, right or wrong in itself; each one must be examined in light of the culture as a whole and evaluated in terms of how it works in the context of the entire world.” Mexican culture and American culture vary within marriage, celebrations, and education.…

When I was growing up, every christmas I would go to my Grandmother’s house, and have a christmas dinner with my Dad’s side of the family. Because my Grandmother was the first generation in America, she brought lots of british recipes with her. I remember going to her house and eating lamb, yorkshire pudding, and a host of other foods. These experiences helped me relate more to the british culture, and showed me many foods I still love today. Another holiday dinner that also a tradition in my family is thanksgiving dinner with my mom. Although her side of the family is nordic, a lot of the recipes we eat are american dishes. My Aunt typically brings scalloped potatoes and sugar cookies for dessert, my Mom cooks turkey and makes preparations for the dinner, and other dinner guests for the most part bring dessert items. These food…

Many cultures in all parts of the world have totally different ways of celebrating and doing things, then North America does, but these societies are slowly changing and beginning to have some of the same customs. Cultural globalization is the diffusion of ideas and values around the world to strengthen social relations. Food is a major part of globalization as one can get Asian or “Chinese food” almost anywhere in the world and not just in China. While the food is Americanized it is still a Chinese culture in which was spread around the world. Another example of globalization on food is Japan and their obsession with Kentucky Fried Chicken, also known as KFC here in America. Japan is so obsessed with this American food chain and food they’ve…

An items history and origin does not make it inevitably America. The history and the origin in which the item was created determine its culture/origin. Many believe the Americas rich history in fast food, media, and movies/cinema is the driving force of creation for other countries. Films, fashion, and fast food can allow cultures everywhere the feeling of American culture without actually having to be here. With this feeling it is inevitable and nearly impossible not to recognize the products origin. McDonalds restaurants, for example, are known globally for its burgers and fries served fast. This description is commonly the way many explain America to anyone that asks. Fast cars, convenience, fast food, and growing culture are symbols of the American way of life. A second, American symbol would be reality television. Just like film, reality television allows watchers to get a peek into the real life of an American individual or group of people. This displays the lifestyle and choices an American has and makes. Exposure to music, no matter the genre, and American television can create a platform for non Americans to become globally Americanized. Sports, such as baseball, will allow talent from anywhere to play for American teams. In doing so, gives other cultures a direct opportunity to develop American tendencies and ways of life.…
