Deep South = lower South nicknamed the “Cotton Kingdom” for its recently settled areas that were dominated by cotton production
De Bow’s Review = journal containing everything from agricultural reports, statistical data, and economic analysis to literature, political opinion, and commentary. The magazine took an increasingly pro-Southern view and supported the reestablishment of slave trade
Colonial Dependency = Reasons: great profitability of the region's agricultural system (cotton production) and refusal to move forward since they were making a profit, so they depended on North for whatever they didn't have

Cavalier Myth = Belief that all prosperous Southern planters were descendants from English Cavaliers
Planter Aristocracy = Determined the political, economic, and even the social life of their region. the wealthiest had home in towns or cities as well as summer homes, and they traveled widely, especially to Europe. they were defined as the cotton magnates, the sugar, rice, and tobacco nabobs, the whites who owned at least 40 or 50 slaves and 800 or more acres.
Southern Honor = All white males adopted an elaborate code of chivalry, which obligated to defend their "honor", often through dueling. The idea of honor in the South was only partly connected to the idea of ethical behavior and bravery; also tied to the importance among white males of the public appearance of dignity and authority. Avenging insults was a social necessity in many parts of Southern society, and avenging insults to white Southern women was most important obligation of a man

With ‘Slave Country’, Adam Rothman explains how the drive for settlers to take the risk of going to the South was all centered around the expansion of territory for plantations with slave workers. With more land that was being used to expand the sugar cane and cotton plantations, settlers were willing to sell their homes in the North and move to the Deep South with their slaves and begin their journey in becoming entrepreneurs.…

    1. Alexis De Tocqueville: a young French aristocrat who visited the United States in the 1830s, and was amazed by the informal manners and democratic attitudes of Americans. The most able men in the United States are very rarely placed at the head of affairs,” Alexis de Tocqueville concluded in Democracy in America (1835). The reason, Tocqueville suggested, lay in the character of democracy itself. Most citizens ignored important policy issues, jealously refused to elect their intellectual superiors, and listened in awe to “the clamor of a mountebank [a charismatic fraud] who knows the secret of stimulating their tastes.”…

Yes the “Cult of Honor” idea does really influence the culture of the South. White males in the South thought that they had to defend their “honor”. They spent their entire life being courteous and respectful to everyone and expected it back in return. If someone violated them in any way, they would get into a verbal or physical fight with them, sometimes even dueling with them. They thought it showed bravery, dignity, and authority. Anything that challenged the dignity, social station, or “man hood”, would result in them having to defend their honor. But most of all, any insult to a white southern woman was the most important obligation of a southern gentleman.…
