The Pros & Cons To Anxiety Treatments
By Bowe Packer
Aug 16, 2009
If you have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, chances are that you will be given an option of different treatments. These treatments may include anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medication and therapy. There are pros and cons to all of these types of anxiety treatments. Here is a run-down of what to expect with each:

Anti-Depressants

Today, most anti-Depressants are used in combination with anti-anxiety medication. Anxiety does not often come on its own - it is usually the result of an underlying cause and, in most cases, depression. Anxiety can be a very disabling illness if not treated. So can depression. This is why most doctors will want to treat the cause of the anxiety

If you think the anxiety attack is bad - just wait until you start withdrawal. Doctors have a way to help you withdraw from anxiety medications without making you feel as though you are losing your mind. They wean you off the medications with the use of other drugs. If you take anti-anxiety medications, use them sparingly and do not develop a dependency on them. If you find that you are taking them more than prescribed, talk to your doctor about a withdrawal program.

Therapy

Therapy will also help to get to the root of your anxiety. While someone who is suffering from anxiety will often focus on something insignificant, this is not usually the cause of the anxiety. Therapy is a great way to get to the heart of the matter. The problem is that it is not the instant cure that everyone these days wants. But in the long run, therapy can do wonders in helping to relieve your anxiety as well as your depression.

Chances are that if you have an anxiety attack, you may be prescribed anti-anxiety medication. If it happens again, you should talk to your doctor about getting anti-depressants to cure the underlying problem as well as get into a therapy class that can help you in the long run. Anti-anxiety medications work well for the instant cure, but are not the answer for the long term

People have been using herbs to help anxiety symptoms for eons in time even back in the old prehistoric caveman days. And you know what? These herbs in the right combinations can cut anxiety symptoms by half. I have been using a variety of herb combinations to help anxiety symptoms and this is my all time favorite combination. Mug Wort Valerian Chamomile St. Johns Wort Skull Cap Making a tea with these herbs is easy, just take a pinch of each and place in a small piece of coffee filter or clean piece of muslin and tie shut with a string. Next, steep the herb packet in 8 ounces of hot water for five minutes. For longer relief, Herbal sleep capsules work great for calming down anxiety symptoms. They usually last for 6 - 8 hours which is a good long time, and my most favorite is a proprietary herbal formula called Twilight Moon which I found on Ebay. You might be asking if these capsules will make you sleepy. Sleep formulas are supposed to make a person sleep, but not if you are dealing with moderate anxiety symptoms. Anxiety generally super charges the whole body mostly a certain part of the brain that produces a fear response, the amygala. And herbal sleep capsules are designed to calm down the body and the mind in a relatively relaxed person to sleep. But in the case where anxiety is gripping you, the herbs relax you…

However, when the symptoms begin to take over and there is no energy left to interact in life, function, or even move, then it is time to seek help. These disorders are treatable. Success varies with each individual. The difficulty level depends on the severity of the disorder. People with anxiety usually have another disorder or mental illness at the same time. This could make symptoms more severe and recovery long and difficult. It is very important to get treatment for both disorders. It is possible to respond to treatment within a few weeks or months. Sometimes it can take over a year; it all really depends on the individual (ADAA Staff). Although treatment is individualized, there are certain practices that have been used of the years that have seemed effective for most patients. One well-established form of therapy is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. “It is a highly effective treatment that focuses on identifying, understanding, and changing thinking and behavioral patterns” (Treatment). Change in behavior can usually be seen in twelve to sixteen weeks (ADAA). In CBT therapy the patient is involved in his/her own recovery. They have a sense of control, and learn skills that will be useful in their life. CBT patients read about the problem. They are asked to keep records between their appointments, and complete assignments at home where they can practice their treatment…
