Antigone And Ethical Dilemmas

The cost of tragedy is a huge predicament in society. Having to decide between two moral wrongdoings is almost impossible. With no obvious answer, you must decide between the lesser of two evils from an ethical standpoint. While there may be tough decisions to be made, you need to ask yourself the obvious question as well as the tragic one. A situation may seem tragic, but a truly tragic situation is only when it involves moral wrongdoing. Choosing to eat at home vs eating with your friend for example would be an obvious question. While it may be tough for you decide what to do, neither of your choices are morally wrong. Nussbaum believes that most of the time when you are in the midst of a tragic question, it is because you are being dumb.
When confronted with this situation you are suppose to ask yourself the question of whether you realize you are in a tragic conflict, and if you can change the way you are acting to avoid it. Nussbaum brings up an example of the story of Antigone. In this tale, The king Creon tells the entire city that anyone who offers burial to the traitor Polynices will also be considered a traitor to the city, and be put to death. Immediately Antigone knows that she cannot agree with Creon's ruling because Polynices is her brother, and not seeking burial for her kin would be a violation of her fundamental religious obligation. In this current situation, both people think that they are the protagonist in their narrow thinking mindset. They both need to reflect on their action and come together to work on a compromise that will keep them feeling morally
