Anthropomorphism In Maus Book Report

Art Spiegelman wrote a graphic novel about a father and son talking about their past and present involving the Holocaust. The son, Artie, is trying to learn about the past of his father, Vladek. Art Spiegelman portrayed this book using anthropomorphism. Anthropomorphism is the idea of using different animals or objects to represent a human with human characteristics. The usage of anthropomorphism in this book has helped the readers better understand the book. Many people believe this is a serious topic and it should not been seen as a joke, but Spiegelman made the topic a little more at ease using animals to represent the people and the different nationalities. Anthropomorphism in Maus is helpful because it shows the difference of each the animals because they are symbolic to the different nationalities, the social stereotypes of the animals match the social stereotypes of the nationality being represented in that animal, and it makes things less horrific. The animals in this book were symbolic to the different nationalities that were involved in the Holocaust. The main animals in the book were the mice and the cats. The cats were the Germans and the mice were the Jews. This made it better to understand the book and what is going on. People were able to see the book more visually.
