Anthem Essay
When Equality and Liberty escape from their society, they begin to learn more about what it means to be an individual like in the Unmentionable Times. In the house in the mountains, they discover many things from the Unmentionable Times, including books. From these books, Equality discovers the word “I.” He realizes that each of them has the freedom to think and choose for themselves and they did not have to think the same as other men. Not only does he discover “I”, Equality finds that in the Unmentionable Times, each man had his own name that was to identify one person from another. In Chapter 12, Equality tells Liberty about the names: “My dearest one, it is not proper for men to be without names. There was a time when each man had a name of his own to distinguish him from all other men. So let us choose our names…” (98). Equality chooses the name Prometheus. In Greek mythology, Prometheus was the son of the Titan Iapetus and Clymene. Although Prometheus is technically not a god, he is considered as the god of forethought and craftiness. In the myth, Prometheus was trusted to mold mankind out of clay; however, his attempts to better the lives of mankind made Zeus angry. Prometheus then tricked Zeus into taking a lesser sacrifice from the people. Zeus became very angry and decided to hide fire from the humans as a punishment. In return, Prometheus stole the fire from the gods to give to the humans. Zeus created Pandora, the first woman, to deliver misfortune to mankind. As punishment to Prometheus, he was tied to a rock on a mountain and given a curse that said that every day, an eagle would come and eat his liver. Ayn Rand chose the name Prometheus for Equality because he was the one who tried to bring light to man and make their quality of life better. There are many comparisons between Prometheus’ story and Equality’s story. Zeus is comparable to the government in Equality’s society. When Equality tried to better the lives of men, the government

Prometheus and Gaea, characters in the book Anthem, fought through the struggle to gain singular knowledge and individuality. Prometheus devoted his life for a chance at having individual intelligence, in a place where everyone is looked upon as a whole, nothing more, nothing less. In spite of the strong force for everyone to conform to “collectivism”, Prometheus strived to hold the values that meant the most to him without betraying them. Discovering a new advancement of science was something that brought love and joy to his life. Gaea is nothing short of a strong character. She also violates the rules and customs of her society. For example, when Prometheus and Gaea make eye contact, she was the first person to make the first move and communicate. In her society, no one is allowed to have a thought of one’s own. The name Gaea, which she was given as she and Prometheus came in their new society, upholds her as the mother of the new race, which makes her the channel for Equality 7-2521’s descendants. Gaea is in fact, a helping factor in the creation of the new and independent world. She helps to paint the structure of the fresh society, along with Prometheus. They are both fictitious examples of the great scholars of history who have made extraordinary breakthroughs despite of the problems they’ve faced.…

In the novel Anthem, Ayn Rand's use of diction and figurative language provides readers with an excellent understanding of the style and tone in the novel. The author wrote Anthem in a deliberately simple, serious style to complement the story going on in the novel. It is one that is simple and serious, because of the major conflict, which is that Equality 7-2521 struggles to identify himself in a society that has rejected individualism in favor of collectivism, where an individual has no rights, existing only to serve the state. Throughout the story Anthem, Ayn Rand uses unique style, figurative language, and diction to prove the matter at hand.…

Prometheus was an odd character if one considers his story, that of no violence or death. This Titan, ironically, could not stand to see the humans suffer with the fate Zeus and his fellow Titans commanded, so he disobeyed authority and gave mankind fire. As punishment, Zeus killed him over and over and after being unsatisfied, chained him to a large tree to never move, but only able to watch the humans. Zeus was not satisfied, however, so he punished Prometheus’ brother, Epimetheus. This happens in the story of Pandora’s box. Yet, symbols and characteristics that have inspired authors around the world come from Prometheus, which can be called the good heart, or some similar things. Heroes can’t only fight, kill, and claim…

The society and government in which a person lives is one of the most influential factors for their religion, values and what is socially acceptable within the terms of society. In Ayn Rand’s Anthem, the dystopian society’s government has a very prominent role in every citizen’s life. The council, the group of people who run the society, established many rules and ways of thinking towards appearance and lifestyle. In this society, being different is considered evil because the council engraved into the citizen’s heads that it is only socially acceptable to be one of the group. Prometheus, the main character, is individualized in the civilization as one of the smartest, tallest and most capable people. These characteristics resulted in rejection and outcast treatment from the council. Society perceives cleverness and height as a curse, consequentially living a life of sins and transgressions. To prevent citizens from stepping out of obedience and overthrowing their power, the leaders of this dystopian society maintain a negative connotation toward individuality.…

Equality had been different from his brothers since birth physically and mentally. This was a great sin in this society and Equality thought of it as a curse because uniformity was hailed. They were all supposed to think and be the same with nothing to differentiate them from each other. They were not allowed a name for this reason, so when Equality discovered the answer to the nagging sensation he felt of missing something, he gave himself the name Prometheus. He realized that for things to ever change he had to escape the homogenous mindset that drained the happiness and quality of life of his fellow brothers. Prometheus…

This can accurately portray Equality since he rebelled against his society and the House of Scholars. Equality/Prometheus had then given Liberty the name Gaea, which I’m familiar with it meaning something along the lines of “great earth”. When I researched her it had told me that Gaea, the Greek Goddess, had birthed the first Titans or Gods, and the first humans. Knowing now that Liberty/Gaea is pregnant with Equality/Prometheus’s child, this is beginning to lead to a new race where everyone is their own…

“The sacred word: Ego.” (Rand 105) Ego is the word that makes Equality 2-2521’s morality different from the beginning to the end of the book. Imagine going from no freedom or independence at all to finally knowing the word “I”. In this society that Equality 7-2521 lived in you would be a loud to be alone at all. The morality in the beginning is that it is god to be as one and bad to an individual. By the end, Equality 7-2521 learns that it is good to be an individual and bad to be the exact same as everyone else.…

The descriptions and labels applied to Liberty are Rand’s way of demonstrating man’s dominance over women. A person’s name is their identity. When someone is given a name, it gives them an identity to become. Equality renames Liberty two different times. First, he names her “the Golden One” (41), and then when they are in their new home, “Gaea...the mother of a new kind of gods” (99). By renaming Liberty, Equality shows that men can obliterate and redetermine a woman’s entire identity and life purpose. When Equality spots Liberty for the first time, he describes her appearance:…

Equality 7-2521's own name is ironic. He is represented as far from equal than his people in his society. He stands for liberty and freedom of the individual, which are opposed to equality, since equality means that everyone is the same. Liberty 5-3000, is a character who stands for freedom. What is ironic about her name is that her society would name her Liberty 5-3000, since that is what it destroys. Collective 0-0009, has no irony in his name, he is the perfect spokesperson for collectivism: “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever" (1.8). All in all, in the society of collectivism, they have no identity of their own. They are not allowed to be individual and be unique an do things like fall in love with who they want, cry, feel…
