Annotated Bibliography 1. Boyd, Hannah. Keeping Schools Safe. Education.com. Web page.
Secondary Source.
Intended Audience: Parents concerned with school safety issues.
This article talks about the statistics in school safety, revealing that violence in schools are actually at a decline (most likely due to the technological advances). As far as preventing violence, Boyd says you should ask your child if he feels safe in school and if there are any problems. Also, talk with your school to find out what it’s doing to stay safe, always empower the students and be involved.
I am going to use Boyd’s statistics that show a rapid decrease in school violence due to technological advances in my paper

It had no security, phone, or plans in case of an emergency. Then Mieszowski goes on to answer various questions about the schools and their safety/precautions.
I intend to use the facts about the Amish School shooting. The school was extremely vulnerable, not even having access to a phone. It will help my paper by showing that you need certain technological advances to stay safe.
3. Straeley, Daena. EDUCATION: Schools prepare for shootings, other emergencies. Enterprise Media. Web page.
Primary Source.
Original Intended Audience: Parents concerned with the safety of their children.
This article talks about the safety of schools and how to prevent major catastrophes from happening before it’s too late. Daena focuses on lockdown procedures and training sessions. It helps enforce a safe surrounding as well as preps the students for the worst.
I intend to use this in my paper, using Daena’s points for helping children cope with a tragedy.

5. Volokh, Alexander and Snell, Lisa. Strategies to Keep Schools Safe. The Reason Foundation. Web page.
Secondary Source.
This article talks about dividing school safety into three methods: measures related to school management, measures related to environmental modification, and educational and curriculum-based measures. School management will deal with discipline and punishment, environmental modifications will enhance video cameras and police officers, and curriculum measures will focus on teaching the students how to resolve a problem.
I intend to use her three points, as well as a full-length description of them, to show what a school needs to do to prep not only their students but their school as well.

On the night of February 10, 2007, 13-year-old Kyle Koslop ended his life in his bedroom. He was the 38th person in Luzerne County under the age of 24 to commit suicide since the year of 2000 (Grochowski). Last year, at least three more students from Luzerne County committed suicide; two students from Pittston Area and one student from Nanticoke. What should be done is outlined in an article by Johnathan Doll, the article suggests threat assessments be done for every school. Violence in schools is a big problem and comes in many different forms. In Nancy Day’s book, Violence in Schools: Learning in Fear, she talks about why students don’t always feel that they are in a safe environment. Statistics show that a school crime is committed every six seconds. That is six hundred crimes every hour, and of all the crimes in the United States, about eleven percent are crimes in school. In a school poll, about sixteen percent of the students had said they have been in a physical…

Every single day, millions of kids across the country wake up, get ready for the day, and head to school. The parents of these children trust the school with many things; a safe bus ride, a productive environment, and most importantly, keeping their kids safe throughout the day. School districts take pride in this, and on a normal basis, things will go smoothly. Despite all of their efforts, though, one of the most serious and saddening problems that affects schools today is the occurrence of school shootings. Since 1980, there have been over 50 deadly shootings in the United States that occurred on school campuses. There have been many actions taken to prevent these terrible acts, but because they are so unpredictable, shootings still occur. There are many more things we can do to prevent school shootings, horrible events that do not need to occur, and to help those who suffer from thoughts of violence.…

Parents and politicians focused on physical things such as security officers, bullet-proof glass, metal detectors and video surveillance cameras for school safety. The difference between these suggestions are mental and physical, to explain, training someone how to be safe and to ready the staff for a response to any emergencies, lockdowns, evacuation procedures, and student threats compared to actually installing a safety device such as cameras and bulletproof windows. In regards to the parents and police suggestions, In the article School Support Staff Security and Emergency / Crisis Planning Training, Ken Trump writes “National School Safety and Security Services offers specialized support staff emergency preparedness training for secretaries, custodians and maintenance staff, and food services staff. This program has been designed to be conducted in a series of one or two hour sessions (longer if time permits) per employee group (separate sessions for secretaries, custodians and food services staff) in a manner respective of time constraints for staff release from buildings. Schools want Police Officers in schools to help prevent incidents that happen in school. In the past there have only been Police Officers in schools to educate the students in the DARE Program and to deal with criminal matters. Now, the Police Officers in the schools have become the first line of defense to prevent or handle school shootings. Law enforcement personnel need to coordinate with school districts to create plans, improve strategies, and examine preventative measures (Farris, 2013). Schools must understand that without the help and support of Law Enforcement, Fire, and Emergency Services they will not have enough resource to fully be prepared for an…

There is by all accounts a developing rate of adolescent brutality on the planet today, the greater part of which happens in schools. The size of the country's worry about school brutality is reflected in Goal 2010: Educate America Act. It states by the year 2010, each school in America will be free of medications and brutality and will offer a taught situation helpful to learning. No kid or youth should be frightful while in transit to class, be perplexed while there, or need to adapt to weights to make unfortunate decisions (U. S. Branch of Education, 1997). Whenever instructors and understudies stress more over their security than about instruction, they aren't concentrating on educating or learning. Schools where savagery happen causes…

(Significance and background) Everybody in this class room has had or will have children. Anyway it will happen that your kids will become the most important point of your life. You will do everything to keep them happy. When they are small only you can influence on their behavior. Parents always want to see their kids healthy, well-bread and happy. After some time, when your heirs grow up enough, they will go to school. As soon as this happens you lose part of your influence on their upbringing. The school grabs this part from you. Students usually spend 1/3 of their day time there. This new society will build up their way of thinking and way of behavior. A lot depends on new friends, teachers, and studying, of course. The atmosphere inside the school building is important, too. There should be a spirit of studying, co-working, and pride. And one of the most important points to reach these is wearing school uniform. I positive that students in school should wear it. In my country all schools have special uniforms for elementary school level, and high school students wear business suits with ties. High school is the first chance for students to feel that they are a part of business society. Americans are very free in their choices. On the one hand this is good, but on the other…kids begin think that they can do whatever they want to, and, unfortunately, sometimes they do not have discipline and do not show respect to their parents at all… I think this happens because they begin to feel themselves free too early. And sometimes accidents happen……
