In the play Antigone by Sophocles, the main character defies the king and the civil law of Thebes to follow her heart and put her brother, Polyneices, to rest. Most people know the name Susan B Anthony; she exhibited civil disobedience in the form of illegally voting in the 1872 Presidential elections. Many people will be surprised to find out that Antigone and Susan are a lot alike. They both fought for what they believed in, despite the fact that they were women and were "sexually inferior" to men, but they have their differences as well; which include, Antigone was defying the law because she wanted her brother to have a proper burial, but Susan defied the law because she felt women deserved the same voting rights as men.…
The play Antigone was written by Sophocles in about 442 B.C. Now back in his day, there were kings, queens, and kingdoms. But things have changed since then and by the time the year got to be 1970, most of that was gone. I’m sure it was hard for the director of the 1970’s version of Antigone to write a script based on a concept most living people have never seen before. So that is probably the reason why the book and the movie are so different.…
We do not see Antigone’s inner turmoil until Scene 4 when she is being led to the vault where she is to die. She is speaking to Choragos and the Chorus and begs for pity. She feels as if “sleepy Death summons [her] down to Acheron, that cold shore: There is no bridesong there, nor any music” (4. 5-10). Antigone feels as if there is no hope left and begins to regret her decision because she will never be able to, for example, get married.…

A tragedy is a serious work of fiction that presents the downfall of its protagonist, who through some error in judgment, weakness in character, or twist of fate suffers crushing defeat or death. It also must involve incidents arousing pity and fear. The novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, and the Greek drama Antigone, by Sophocles, both have the woeful elements of a tragedy. In Antigone, the main character Antigone is of the cursed family of Oedipus, who unwittingly slew his father and married his mother, who bore him two sons and two daughters. The Gods, enraged by this incestuous relationship, cursed Oedipus’ entire bloodline. In Of Mice and Men, two men struggle to make ends in the brutal times of the Great Depression, by traveling across America looking for jobs as ranch hands. Lennie, the larger of the two, has a mental disability, so George, Lennie’s best and only friend, takes care of him no matter how many times Lennie gets them into trouble.…
Antigone, deliberately disobeying the law placed by the king himself, Creon, buried her brother Polyneices. Antigone acted on purpose when Creon said, “And you dare defy the law,” and Antigone replied, “I dared” (1082). Antigone’s response to Creon shows her awareness that she did something faulty. Antigone’s defiance resulted in Creon having his men put her in a stone vault to die or live, depending on God’s will. In this vault, Antigone “made a noose of her fine linen veil and hanged herself” (1104). If she had not hung herself, Death’s work could have been lessened by three lives.…
Mayor: Well spoken son. It’s a parents’ prayer to raise a child that doesn’t go against their parents’ word. That girl is too much of a whore so you go and find another girl. I am confident in my decision so let’s depend on my authority and don’t be overruled by some girl.…

Antigone can be seen as the protagonist of Antigone. She is the opposing view in the argument of morality versus morality. Unlike Creon, Antigone has the image of thinking a bit more clearly than Creon’s paranoid thoughts. She tries to get her sister, Ismene, to help bury their brother, Polyneices, so that the household does get cursed by the gods. Also, Antigone wanted Polyneices to have a safe passage towards the…
Male authority is a dominant theme in Sophocles’ “Antigone.” Men occupied the land, ruled the towns and assigned the women duties to perform. Antigone, however, believed that she was just as strong as the men who ruled society during that time, which led to her downfall. The goal of the feminist movement has generally been to seek equality between the sexes. Through the women’s movement, women have won the right to vote, and can now compete for traditionally male roles in the workplace. Although the feminist movement has largely taken place during the last 200 year, many figures in history have embodied characteristics of the contemporary feminist, such as the character of Antigone in Sophocles’ “Antigone.”…
The tragic play Antigone, written by Sophocles, is a story of mixed emotions and drastic reactions. At the beginning of the play, the current ruler of Thebes, Creon, orders that no one is to touch the deceased Polynecies. However, Antigone has a very different plan for his body. Antigone tries to convince her sister, Ismene, to help her bury her brother, but she is too afraid to break the law. After sprinkling dirt on the body, Creon sentences Antigone to death, even though she is engaged to be married to Creon’s son, Haimon. Antigone, Haimon, and Creon’s wife, Eurydice, all commit suicide in the end. Antigone exemplifies Aristotle’s classical definition of a tragedy by consisting of quantitative and organic parts, making the story seem probable, and having a tragic hero. In Aristotle’s definition of a tragedy, he states that there must be two parts: quantitative and organic. When reading Antigone, the quantitative parts, prologos, episodes, choric, odes, and exodos, are clearly labeled before each section. The story also has organic parts, recognition and pathos. The recognition part of the play is when Creon decides to release Antigone because it is the wrong thing to do. He says, “Come with me to the tomb. I buried her, I/ will set her free,” (act 5, lines 106-107). The pathos, or scene of suffering, occurs to Creon when the realization that everyone is dead hits him. He is engulfed in sorrow and self-sufferance because his wife and son have perished. He even goes far enough to say, It is right that is should be. I alone am guilty. I know it, and I say it. Lead me in, Quickly, friends. I have neither life nor substance. Lead me in (act 4, lines 121-124) When reading carefully, the parts of Antigone are obvious to the reader, coinciding with Aristole’s definition. Another part of Aristotle’s definition is that the story line should be probable. Antigone’s plot seems possible because of the real emotions and the…

Creon is the king in the play Antigone. Antigone is about a princess, Antigone, who buries her brother after he and her other brother fought each other to death. As a result, King Creon wants to punish/kill Antigone for this while still him remembering that he had raised her. Due to the brothers fighting to death, a place to be king opened up for Creon to become the new king. The quote, “Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other,” is by Carl Jung. The quotation relates to how when Creon wasn’t king, he ruled by love, but when he became king, his love lacked and ruled by pride and power.…
