Animal Rights

Non-Human Animal Rights Do non-human animals have rights? Animal rights debates are incredibly controversial. Animal rights activists argue for animal’s rights whereas others argue that animals have no rights. Animals have many rights, which is why there are laws set in place to protect animals. Animals have rights to protect themselves from animal cruelty. When taking into consideration animal rights, humans need to consider animal rights laws, animal abuse (using animals as food and testing), animal rights support groups, and animal cruelty stories.
Animal rights is defined as “the rights of animals, claimed on ethical grounds, to the same humane treatment and protection from exploitation and abuse that are accorded to humans” according to ("Animal rights | Define Animal rights at Dictionary.com"). According to ("Stray Pet Advocacy" par 4) Throughout the entire United States, there are laws prohibiting cruelty to animals to protect animals from human torture. Each state governs different laws and punishments, however every state addresses the issue of animal cruelty. Laws in place that can be charged are Animal Cruelty, Intentional Cruel Neglect, Aggravated Cruelty, Intentional/Malicious Torture, Cruelty resulting in serious injury or death, Animal Torture, and Neglect of Owners Duties. ("Stray Pet Advocacy" par 1) states, 41 of the 50 states in the United States recognize animal cruelty as a felony provision.

When humans argue either for or against animal rights, they do not take animal welfare into consideration. The right for humans to use animals has a huge impact on animal rights. Human right to use animals include using food, clothing, and entertainment of animals for human selfish purpose. According to ("Animal Cruelty Facts and Statistics : The Humane Society of the United States" par 4) the most commonly reported victims of animal cruelty are dogs, Pitbulls in particular.

Animals from creation have been an essential integral part of human beings. They have frequently been, either directly or indirectly, used by humans to achieve their needs. Hence they are important part and great asset to humans. These animals do have lives different from that of humans and equally have some similar characteristics with humans like emotional feelings. This very fact puts humans in a difficult position of determining the amount of respect and regard that should be accorded to the animals. Some people agitate that animals should be granted same equal rights as human beings. Inasmuch as I quite agree that animals should be granted some rights in order to be free from cruel treatments by humans, the issue of granting them equal full rights as enjoyed by humans should not come up. An objective review of such factors as tradition, cultural believes, religious, socio-economic, and medical as well as salient natural features that distinguish animals from humans like morality, and ability to…

Animal cruelty is not only the horrific things that are being done to the animals, but it also includes not properly taking care of them. According to an article in the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Debbie Jugan states “Most of the laws against animal cruelty can be summed up in one phrase: common sense. It is simply common sense to take care of the animals we human beings keep captive. They must be provided clean, fresh water on a daily basis. They must be fed a quality diet that meets their nutritional needs. They must be provided adequate shelter, protected from cold and heat, wind, rain and snow. They must…

    Animal Bill of Rights

I believe animals do not need a Bill of Rights because they already have plethora of laws that protect all of their basic needs. For example, Germany has already passed laws to protect the basic rights of Ape’s. In the article “primates” they said, “The Green Party in Germany is preparing two bills supporting the Great Ape Project”(Yong). Another way that animals already have their rights protected is, Dogs have shelters and pounds to go to if they have no home or are left on the street, you are also not allowed to beat them or have dog fights with them. The human society states that, “Dogfighting is a felony offense in all 50 states…and… dogs used in these events often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or even days after the fight”(Humane Society).…

Animal rights debater Stephen R. L. Clark points out, “As humans, we are like the other animals and unlike them, tied to them and separate, in many ways,” (Golding). For example, humans are animals, our nature is an animal nature, our desires are, for the most part, animal desires, and our habit of hunting is like that of other animals. However, what sets us apart from other animals is the fact that we have legal rights (the right to vote) and moral rights (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness). The distinction must be made that animals obviously can't have the same rights as humans, because their interests are not always the same as ours, and some rights would be irrelevant to animals. For instance, an animal such as a cat doesn't have an interest in voting and, therefore, doesn't have the right to vote because that right would be as meaningless…

A few weeks ago I decided to do my research paper in regards to animal abuse. Knowing from the very beginning that I was completely against animal abuse I thought that this paper would be a piece a cake. All I would have to do was to give examples of actual cases of animal abuse and just throw in my personal feelings on that particular case. But the deeper I dug the more enlightened I became on the subject, which led me to ask myself the question that when it comes to animal abuse and/or animal cruelty what rights do animals actually have, if any, and what place do they have in our society? Historically, animals did not have any rights or a place in our society, since they were considered solely as “property”. Today, the courts still solve issues under the same concept as if they are “property”. Animals should not be considered as property they should be considered as part of the family, as for production animals they should be treated with the utmost respect, and testing on animals should be done away with.…

Many people may not know that animal cruelty has been around for hundreds of years. . In the article "Animal Cruelty Prosecution" published by American Prosecution Research Institute found that, The Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony established “The Body of Liberties” found by the Animal Cruelty Prosecution, in 1641. The Body of Liberties was a document written for the protection of animals from unnecessary pain and suffering. Animal cruelty happens every day whether it is from starving, beating, lack of medical care or proper housing for animals. We are in need of stricter laws to help fight the rights of animals. Animal laws should be more strict on people because people are getting away with harming these beautiful animals.…
