Such evidence of this human animal interaction was a breakthrough. The Saltville site, often referred to as SV-2, in the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia holds great significance due to its abundance of various fossil and archeological clues to the past. In recent news, there have been articles describing a discovery that may show signs of human life in the area earlier than initially thought. Per The Associated Press- Richmond, “artifacts at Saltville date to 14,000 years ago, a few hundred years older than those found at a site in Chile” (“Just how old”). As well as the ancient human civilization in Saltville, the oldest Pre-Clovis site in the southern hemisphere is thought to be 56 km off the coast of Chile in South America (“Monte Verde”). Radiocarbon dated to be about 12,500 B.P., Chile falls behind Saltville by more than ~1,500 years, thus Saltville pre-dates Chile. The date McDonald claims that the…

Ethology is the study of animal behavior. There are two specific categories of behavior: learned ad innate. Orientation behaviors place the animal in their specific environment. Animals move away from sensory input in taxis where as behavior is the response to sensory input. Stimulus’ of light, heat, moisture, sound, or chemicals are mostly found in taxis. Kinesis is the movement that does not result in orientation with stimulus. When animals respond to each other by aggressive or submissive responses, they exhibit agonistic behavior. In a complex series of activities that allow finding, courting, and mating, species exhibit mating behavior.…

A dog attacks without provocation when the victim is merely present and is otherwise unaware of the dog’s presence prior to the attack, provided the victim’s presence at the site of the attack is not unlawful. (Messa at 4.) In Messa, the plaintiff was attacked by a guard dog when she exited the elevator on the fifth floor. When she entered the elevator she was unware that the fifth floor was residential and that it contained guard dogs. In the article, Now You See It, Now You Don’t: Object Permanence in Dogs, Thomas R. Zentall and Kristina F. Pattison explain a new theory. Many scientists have purposed the idea that dogs learn object permanence just as well as most babies do. Both of their characteristics are very similar within the experiments they ran to compare the two. Further testing was done to fully access the ability of dogs and object permeance. The results of the tests were astounding.…

The name of the bobcat is quite ironic, because it is literally from the fact that their tails are in fact bobbed, or short. It also has a binomial name, which is Lynx rufus. Interestingly enough, its’ scientific name comes of off Felis, which has to do with the cat family. There had been a debate on whether to classify this species as Lynx rufus or Felis rufus as part of a wider issue regarding whether the four species of Lynx should be given their own genus, or be placed as a subgenus of Felis. Ultimately the Lynx genus is now accepted. The bobcat belongs to the Animalia kingdon, the Chordata phylum and is in the Mammalia class. It is also a part of the Carnivora order and in the Felidae family. Not to mention the Lynx genus and being the L. rufus species.…

Working at a dog daycare, I observe different body languages and ways of communication through dogs every day. I work at a facility called Paw Beach Pet Resort where daycare is available daily for 20+ dogs in a large yard. One of the main things I have observed while watching all the dogs is that they have emotions. Every day they are communicating how they believe they feel to one another and everyone around them. Dogs use certain movements of their bodies and body parts along with different vocalizations to express their emotions. These are movements of the ears, eyes, eyebrows, mouth, head, tail, and entire body, as well as barks, growls, whines and whimpers, and howls. While most often dogs are perceived to behave not only according to their breed, but also by their gender, their body language signals, and understanding the way dogs communicate and interact with one another.…

Living things have seven shared characteristics connecting all of them: reproduction, growth and development, energy use, order, cells, response to the environment, and evolution. When reproducing, all organisms birth their own species and never stray from the natural instinct. After birth, the organism matures and thanks to information they acquire genetically, develop certain features. An example of this is male deer producing antlers in adolescence. While maturing and throughout its entire life, the deer consumes energy through nourishment and uses it as a driving force to move and carry out normal functions.…
