Analyzing Della's Character Of Della
What is the perfect gift for your partner? This woman named Della did something out of the ordinary for the happiness of her husband. The author develops Della’s character through her actions, her speech, and her effects on others. To start off the central insight into Della’s character comes from the sacrifice of her most treasured possession to buy her spouse a gift. This shows her true devotion to her husband and how much she loved him to give up something that was dear to her. In addition, she tried to make the best out of it by curling what hair she had left to show her husband that it wasn't such a big deal. To hide her problems behind a smile is what sometimes holds the relationship up and to her this was just something she could do

The office that had been his dad’s, and his grandfather’s before that, was now Sam’s alone. He proudly rattled off his accomplishments to Lelia, about serving in the Navy for four years during the war, and after that he’d continued on with school, studying and passing the law exam in 1946, then the following year he was admitted to practice before the Federal District Court and two years later he was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. In addition to his law practice, he was extremely involved in local government, serving on the town council. Not bragging, mind you, Sam simply wanted his old friend to know how hard he’d worked. She thinks to herself, “I didn’t want to bring up how I has offered Dee (Wangero) a quilt when she went away to college. Then she had told me they were old-fashioned, out of style”(320). The mother is in disbelief at Dee, who only wants to use her heritage as something for show and tell. Those same blankets she had once refused she now wanted because they fit her own aesthetic, and not at all for the value and meaning behind those quilts. The mother then decides to do something unheard of and, “hugged Maggie to me, then dragged her on into the room, snactched the quilts out of Miss Wangero’s hands and dumped them into Maggie’s lap”(321). The mom has chosen her true heritage over the false, glamorized one that her eldest daughter has decided to create. She gives the quilts to Maggie because in her heart she knows that Miss Wangero does not deserve them, that Maggie can truly appreciate them and know who she is and where she’s come…

Being the eldest child of three, Gertrudis was foreshadowed to be rebellious towards her family traditions. After many years of being oppressed by Mama Elena’s traditions, Gertrudis’ first lust for progress became evident when she had a reaction to her sister Tita's quail in a “magic” rose petal sauce. This reaction causes her to have “such strong emotions in her that she runs off with a solider in the revolutionary army and thus away from her mother’s oppression”. (Napierkowski 193). Gertrudis never has the desire to come back home until the passing of her mother. Esquivel heavily explains, “surely the heat from her body, which was inflamed by love, would travel with that gaze across an infinite distance, with no loss of energy…” Meaning, Gertrudis does not want to continue to have…
