Subject: Analytical Procedures

I have completed the preliminary analytical procedures on the financial statements. I have also compared some of the relevant ratios to Apollo Shoes’ competitors Nike and Reebok. Below are my opinions regarding the financial statements:

The large variations in Net Income of Apollo Shoes should be a concern for the entity and it should further looked into to get a better understanding.
The rate at which the entity collects from its credit sales has been fluctuating and has recently decreased.
The rate at which inventory is turned over has substantially decreased.
Apollo Shoes’ debt to equity ratio is significantly high compared to that of their competitor Nike and also higher than Reebok.

These are currently my observation and I will promptly inform you if there are more concerns.

It is very favorable to see Nike have a debt ratio close to 0 as it shows the company is not taking on too much financial risk. Compared with the industry average, Nike is taking on slightly more risk, although the company is in a good position to do so. Nike’s quick ratio shows their ability to satisfy their liabilities at 1.7 times and with a debt ratio close to 0, they can afford to take on additional financial liabilities to develop their e-commerce sales or invest further in their emerging markets sector to compete against international brands. Comparing Nike against the industry, other companies may not be able to take such risk due to their liquidity restraints, but Nike has the potential to do so if…

In order to break down the memo and see if everything that is said in the memo is correct, I will be using the techniques that authors Keeley and Browne teach us in their book Asking the Right Questions. The authors teach us in order to be critical of something we must ask the right questions to dig through what we are reading and “be able to make a decision if we believe what we are reading…
