Altar 8: “…So when you take an object, say a family photograph, and place it in an altar next to a saint, you are basically saying to the saint, ‘Pray for this person…’ (Turner, 96). In this altar there is an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe as the central focus. There are also, some other religious images, such as the one of Jesus (left frame on the wall). Surrounding the image of the Lady of Guadalupe are many portraits of what appear to be family members, particularly babies. The frames with the infants could be grandchildren of the owner and they might be there to be protected by the Lady of Guadalupe, who also happens to be a mother.…

A symbol is an object, action or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, there are many things that are used for symbolism and some of these things are the animals that are explained throughout the book. During the setting there is a depression where people are getting kicked out of their homes, losing their jobs and having to pick up everything and move to the west in hopes of a better life. However the journey is not what they imagined it to be and some things that help show that are the turtle that symbolizes the journey, the old family cat who symbolizes the change and the Joads dog who symbolizes the toughness.…

The author uses the horned toad to reveal the character’s traits when the narrator’s great-grandmother told her grandson that the horned toad must be returned to where he originally came from. ‘We must return him [the horned toad] to his own place’ (pg. 4, paragraph 8). When Juan died, the narrator and his great-grandmother visited the toad’s grave on a regular basis. “… We kept the horned toad’s death a secret, and we visited his small grave frequently…” (pg. 4, paragraph 8). The Virgin of Guadalupe

When reading “The Virgin of Guadalupe: Symbol of Conquest or Liberation?“ It was clear to me that the Virgin of Guadalupe is a powerful cultural symbol of Mexican identity and nationhood. In colonial times the Virgin of Guadalupe was interpreted as a native, loving and forgiving mother, the intercessor to God the Father and his son, Jesus Christ. Today Guadalupe has been reinterpreted as an empowering symbol of liberation and action rather than as female passivity. In contemporary society the populist appeal of the image cuts across all sectors of Mexican life, and her image is displayed not only in churches, but can also be seen in taxis, buses, on tee-shirts, amulets and as tattoos. Chicano and other Latino societies helped establish the Virgin of Guadalupe as an archetypal emblem of mestizaje. Criollos interpreted Mary's appearance that Mexico was a favored city.…

The interior volume of this 'structure' is an tension of the space that the person looking at the work is standing in. The adjustment of the spectator to the pictured space is one of the first steps in the development of illusionistic painting. Illusionistic painting fascinated many artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

The proportions in this painting are so numerically exact that one can actually calculate the numerical dimensions of the chapel in the background. The span of the painted vault is seven feet, and the depth is nine feet. "Thus, he achieves not only successful illusion, but a rational, metrical coherence that, by maintaining the mathematical proportions of the surface design, is responsible for the unity and harmony of this monumental composition." Two principal interests are summed up by The Holy Trinity: Realism based on observation, and the application of mathematics to pictorial organization.

All of the figures are fully clothed, except for that of Christ himself. He is, however, wearing a robe around his waist. The figure is "real"; it is a good example of a human body. The rest of the figures, who are clothed, are wearing…

A symbol is a person, object, or event that represents ideas in addition to their literal meanings. There are many types of symbolism. There are conventional symbols, which are the classic symbols like the cross, representing faith; the U.S. flag, representing freedom; and the four-leaf clover, representing luck. Another type of symbolism is literary symbolism. Literary symbols are things like common buildings like homes, representing a feeling of safety and love. A literary symbol can be nearly anything in a story, from setting to actions, as long as it is important in a literal sense and also suggests a deeper meaning. There are also archetypal symbols. These are symbols that are ubiquitous and are often found in…

The horse and bull are vital characters in Spanish culture. Some critics believe the rampaging bull, a major motif of destruction here, represents Picasso’s ego. However, other critics suppose the bull symbolizes the onslaught of Fascism. Picasso said it meant darkness and brutality, presumably reminiscent of his prophetic. The mother with the dead child represents the Catholic image of the Virgin and her child. The bird, between the heads of the horse and the bull is a portrayal of broken peace. Some believe the flower in the soldier’s hand is an interpretation of a ray of hope amongst all of the destruction. The triangle in the middle of the canvas suggests the composition of a Greek temple. He also stated that “the horse dying in misery represented the people of Guernica” (Guernica). The entire scene represents Spain itself. The electric light bulb, at the top of the canvas, and the oil lamp held by the woman reaching out the window represent new and old ways of seeing (Sayre 522).…
