Analysis On Why Student Athletes Should Be Paid
The NCAA is considered a non-profit organization by many of the people that are in charge of this business. As a non-profit organization the NCAA averages an annual profit of 6 billion dollars. The volunteers of this company are made slaves by the system. The athletes no longer scoring the game winning touchdowns are soon forgotten about. Many of these athletes going in their thirties and forties are barely able to walk, and cannot go through the day without a headache. Student athletes deserve to be compensated for risking their bodies for the NCAA, and the millions of fans watching for entertainment. Conferences such as the SEC and Pac 12 have signed television contracts worth billions. Coors, Chick-fil-A, and many others spend millions for 30 second ads on air. Turner Broadcasting and CBS Sports spent 10.8 billion for 14 years to broadcast the annual college basketball tournament, which is only 3 weeks out of the 52 week year. With all of this money “that makes it possible for coaches to earn millions, and causes marketers to spend billions” (Nocera 2) and the people working the hardest get nothing. The short answer to this question is no. Paying the athletes can only make these athletic teams more competitive. This system would give the teams that never envisioned playing for a championship a chance to go after the star players, and actually having as chance to get them. People are afraid of change, but the world is changing all around us. If college athletes do get payed like they deserve, it will take some time to adjust, but in the end it will result in a more competitive and balanced league. The money is continuing to grow as we speak, and it will not be stopping anytime soon. It is time to take care of the employees in this company. Student athletes deserve to get money and protection after sports for risking their bodies for the

    If colleges were to pay athletes there would be no fair way to distribute the money. Athletes perform their sport at different levels of ability and for various lengths of time.     The football/basketball coach is the highest paid employee at most private and public universities. In an article in the New York Times Magazine “ Let’s Start Paying College Athletes” by Joe Nocera, Nocera himself writes “The hypocrisy that permeates big-money college sports takes your breath away.     For example, the University of Arizona just went through a big time scandal involving paying college athletes. One recruiting tactic used by tons of colleges is paying or bribing athletes to come to their school with cash or tangible items. These colleges get in tons of trouble and the players do as well. They usually use these tactics on poor recruits and these athletes receive pressure from their families to accept the offering. To help their family financially they accept the offer from a college and most of the time it goes unnoticed, but when these athletes get caught the consequences are tremendous. The athlete at Arizona had his reputation tarnished and his NBA dreams were crushed as well; all because he was trying to help out his family and did not want to struggle financially. So obviously under the table there are transactions happening and I feel that if the NCAA made paying college athletes legal less programs would get in trouble and the NCAA would no longer be corrupt. This would also make the NCAA more balanced because the bigger programs with more excess money would not be able to sway athletes with all this extra money. There are a ton of solutions to this problem, they could just make this bribing legal, they could make a salary system, or some kind of reward system for players. If a college were to make a salary based system for their college athletes it should be a single base salary only because every program spends roughly the same amount of time putting in tons of work even if they do not bring in as much money. If the NCAA were to make a stipend system along with commissions I feel that would be the best option.
